It was presented as a modern interpretation of military-style Sea Wolf watches. Exact-reference sources report an STP 3-13 automatic movement and dive-watch specifications including 200 m water resistance, but they disagree on the case diameter: published figures range from 38 mm to 40 mm. If you are considering one pre-owned, verify the dimensions and condition of the specific watch rather than relying on a single listing.
What is the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Z09209?
The Z09209 is a black-dial Zodiac Super Sea Wolf associated with Hodinkee and U.S. military PX distribution. It was positioned as a contemporary take on military-style Sea Wolf watches, rather than as an unchanged reissue of an original vintage model. Zodiac says the Sea Wolf launched at the Basel Watch Fair in 1953; that history provides context, but does not establish that the Z09209 shares the original watch’s exact design or specifications. Zodiac’s U.S. brand page is the source for the launch history.
The Z09209 is discontinued and is now principally a pre-owned-market find. It is distinct from Zodiac’s current Super Sea Wolf Core models: the current collection page describes 20 ATM water resistance, Swiss hand assembly and a proprietary STP 1-11 movement. Those are current-collection details, not specifications for this reference; exact-reference sources instead report an STP 3-13. Zodiac’s current Super Sea Wolf Core page
What size is the Z09209?
There is no consistent case-diameter figure across the available Z09209 references. The Right Time lists 38 mm, Beyond the Dial gives 39 mm, and Watch Vault lists 40 mm. Treat 38–40 mm as the reported range, not as a confirmed measurement or a claim that the watch was offered in three sizes.
#1 Best Overall
- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
- The Right Time lists a 38 mm case and 13 mm thickness.
- Beyond the Dial describes the model as 39 mm.
- Watch Vault lists a 40 mm stainless-steel case.
For a particular watch, ask the seller to measure it and provide clear photographs and any original documentation. Case diameter alone does not establish how it will wear: lug-to-lug length, case shape, bracelet fit and your wrist all matter. The Right Time lists a 20 mm lug width, but do not assume that a generic strap of that width is guaranteed to fit this case or suit its end-link geometry.
Movement and reported specifications
Exact-reference sources report an automatic STP 3-13 movement. Beyond the Dial additionally reports a date-delete configuration and a 44-hour power reserve; treat those as secondary-source details rather than independently confirmed manufacturer specifications. Zodiac’s current use of the STP 1-11 in its Core collection does not change the reported movement for the Z09209.

| Date and power reserve | Date-delete; 44 hours | Secondary-source details reported by Beyond the Dial. |

Is the Z09209 a good dive watch?
On paper, the reported 200 m water resistance, unidirectional bezel, screw-down crown and sapphire crystal give it the expected equipment of a substantial diver-style watch. However, the sources cited here do not establish certification to a specific dive-watch standard, nor do they provide controlled hands-on testing of legibility, lume, bezel action or real-world water performance. A depth rating should not be treated as proof that a pre-owned example remains water-resistant today.
Before taking a used Z09209 into water, have its seals and water resistance assessed by a qualified watchmaker. For a buying comparison with another vintage-inspired diver, consider measured diameter and lug-to-lug fit, movement and serviceability, bezel and crown condition, dial legibility and lume, bracelet fit, and the particular watch’s service records and price. These are evaluation criteria, not test results for the Z09209.

What to check before buying one pre-owned
Condition can vary from one example to another. The RealReal’s listing for a specific Z09209 reports inaccurate timekeeping and recommends service; that disclosure applies to that individual watch and is not evidence of a model-wide defect. Ask the seller about the exact watch you are considering, and get important answers in writing.
- Timekeeping and service: Request recent timing results and service receipts. If the watch runs inaccurately or has no reliable service history, factor a professional inspection and possible service into your decision.
- Identity and condition: Ask for clear photos of the case, dial, bezel, caseback, bracelet and clasp, and confirm the reference and serial details. Compare them with the listing and any available documentation.
- Bracelet completeness and fit: Confirm the number of included links, whether the bracelet is original to the watch, and whether it fits your wrist.
- Included items and terms: Check what packaging and paperwork are included, whether the seller accepts returns, and whether any stated warranty is still valid. An expired warranty slip is not current coverage.
- Price: Compare current asking prices for similar-condition examples; stock and resale prices vary. Beyond the Dial reports an original price of $1,295, but that historical launch price is not a current valuation.
Listings can help document what a seller claims, but they are not a substitute for checking the individual watch. For example, Watch Vault says its particular example was first sold in August 2020; that date does not establish the sale date, service history or warranty status of other Z09209 watches. The RealReal’s listing is the source for the individual timekeeping disclosure.

Who should consider the Z09209?
The Z09209 may suit a buyer looking for a discontinued, black-dial Super Sea Wolf with a military-inspired presentation and the reported STP 3-13 movement. It is a less straightforward choice for someone who needs a definitive published case measurement, verified manufacturer specifications for every detail, or a ready-to-wear water-resistant watch without an inspection. For fit, service condition and value, the individual example matters more than a general description of the reference.
