Fitbit Air

5 reasons I’m keeping my Fitbit Air and not buying a Fitbit Edge

If your priority is quiet, lightweight health tracking rather than an on-wrist screen, Fitbit Air remains a rational choice over the newly announced Fitbit Edge. Air already covers core heart, sleep and activity measurements, is designed for all-day and overnight wear, and starts at a much lower announced U.S. price. Edge is the more capable option for people who want a display, built-in GPS and richer workout controls—not an automatic upgrade for every Air owner.

At a glance: what changes with Edge?

Feature Fitbit Air Fitbit Edge

GPS Not listed as built in Built-in GPS
Workout support Automatic detection of common activities and workout recaps More than 50 exercise modes and automatic recognition of up to 100 workouts

1. Air’s screenless design avoids another source of interruption

Air is a band without a display. Google says it is designed to sit quietly on the wrist, with deeper information viewed in the Google Health app rather than through on-device notifications. That distinction matters if you do not want a wrist that lights up for messages, calls or metrics throughout the day.

Edge adds a Hybrid OLED screen, glanceable tiles, notifications and a physical side button. Those additions are useful when you want information without reaching for a phone, but they also change the product from a deliberately quiet tracker into a more interactive wearable. Keeping Air makes sense when “notification-free” is a feature, not a missing function.

  • Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
  • Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
  • Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
  • Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]

2. The smaller, lighter form is aimed at continuous wear

Google describes Air as small and light, intended for all-day and overnight wear. That is a design goal rather than a guarantee that every wrist will find it comfortable, but the screenless construction removes the display and associated interface hardware from the band.

Overnight wear is particularly relevant because Air records sleep stages and duration. A simpler band can be preferable if you want to put it on, leave it in place and review results later. Edge may still suit you if its display and controls outweigh the appeal of a minimal profile; the official specifications do not establish that one will fit every user better.

3. Air already covers the health signals many people want

Air’s advertised tracking is broader than a basic step counter. Google lists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 24/7 heart-rate tracking
  • Heart-rhythm monitoring with atrial-fibrillation (Afib) alerts
  • Blood-oxygen (SpO2) readings
  • Resting heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV)
  • Sleep stages and sleep duration
  • Automatic detection of common activities, followed by a workout recap in the Google Health app

These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent accuracy tests or a clinical validation of either device. Google also notes that some health features are not intended for medical purposes. If your goal is trends in sleep, heart rate and everyday activity, Edge’s additional hardware may not add enough value to justify replacing a working Air.

Google Fitbit Inspire 3 - Midnight Zen/Black - Small and Large Bands | Stress management, sleep tracking, 24/7 heart rate, 3-month Google Health Premium membership included, small and large bands

  • Stress less: Keep an eye on your well-being with a daily Stress Management Score, mindfulness sessions, relax breathing sessions, irregular heart rhythm notifications, SpO2, menstrual health tracking, resting heart rate, and more[1,2]
  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

Edge does add ECG, continuous optical heart rate, skin-temperature tracking, sleep stages and HRV. Those additions matter for users who specifically need the extra sensors or want on-device access, but they do not make Air’s existing measurements disappear or become irrelevant.

4. Battery life does not provide a reason to switch

Google lists up to seven days of battery life for both Air and Edge. “Up to” is a maximum estimate: actual runtime depends on settings, feature use and other conditions. Because the published figures are the same, battery endurance alone does not distinguish the two products.

Edge’s replaceable-battery design is a separate long-term consideration. Google calls Edge its first repairable fitness tracker with a replaceable battery. That could reduce the need to replace the whole tracker when the battery eventually loses capacity, but it does not change the quoted charge interval between uses.

5. Air costs substantially less when you do not need Edge’s extras

Google announced Fitbit Air at a starting U.S. price of $99.99, while Edge was announced at $179.99. That is an $80 difference at the stated launch prices, before accessories or any later promotions. Google also announced Air accessory bands starting at $34.99.

Paying more for Edge is easier to justify if you will use its built-in GPS, display, Maps, media controls, notifications, altimeter or expanded exercise catalog. If you record workouts with a phone, prefer checking data in the app and do not need those on-wrist controls, Air preserves the core tracking experience at the lower announced entry price.

When Edge is the better choice

Keeping Air is not a claim that Edge is inferior. Edge is the clearer choice if you want to leave your phone behind while recording routes with built-in GPS, read glanceable information during exercise, control media, receive calls and messages, or choose from more than 50 exercise modes. Google says it can automatically recognize up to 100 workouts and has a display area 46% larger than previous trackers; that percentage is Google’s own product claim.

Edge is listed with 39.2 × 25.5 × 11.5 mm dimensions, 5 ATM and IP68 resistance, and up to seven days of battery life. Air is listed as having no display and up to seven days of battery life. Neither product’s official material establishes independent comparative performance, so the decision should follow the features you will actually use.

Check the subscription and phone requirements

Both devices support most Android 11 or newer phones and iOS 16.4 or newer phones, according to Google’s product material. Some coaching or health functions require Google Health Premium, sold separately, and availability varies by feature and market. Treat Premium as an additional cost rather than an included entitlement, and confirm the functions available in your region before relying on them.

The practical verdict

For an Air owner who values a quiet band, overnight wear, established heart-and-sleep tracking, and a lower entry price, staying put is defensible. Edge earns its premium through the screen, notifications, GPS, expanded workout handling and repairable-battery design. Unless one of those additions solves a specific problem in your routine, the published specifications give no battery or basic-tracking reason that requires an upgrade.
