How quartz and automatic movements work
Quartz: electrical power and a crystal oscillator
A quartz watch uses an electrical source to power an electronic circuit and regulate timekeeping with an oscillating quartz crystal. The circuit converts the crystal’s oscillations into timekeeping signals. Quartz watches do not need to be kept wound, though battery-powered models eventually need a battery replacement. Breitling’s FAQ describes its quartz movements as battery-powered and crystal-regulated.

Automatic: wrist movement winds a spring
An automatic is a mechanical watch that winds itself as you wear it: a rotor responds to wrist movement and winds the mainspring. Energy stored in that spring drives the movement. If the watch is left unworn until its power reserve runs out, it stops. A mechanical watch can also be hand-wound, but this comparison is specifically about automatic watches. Longines explains the difference between automatic and quartz movements.
Which type keeps time more accurately?
Quartz is generally the accuracy choice, but a watch’s published specification matters more than the movement label alone. The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives ±20 seconds per month as a general figure for quartz watches (publication year not stated on the source page). It also notes that mechanical accuracy is evaluated under defined conditions—including mainspring winding, position and temperature—and that results on the wrist may fall outside catalog ranges.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Brand-specific figures illustrate why these values should not be treated as a controlled, like-for-like test. Breitling states that its current thermocompensated SuperQuartz models have a precision of ±15 seconds per year, while its current COSC-certified mechanical watches comply with a maximum deviation of −4 to +6 seconds per day (publication year not stated on the source page for either figure). These specifications apply to the described Breitling products, not to all quartz and automatic watches. Seconds per month, year and day are different units, so check the exact model’s stated tolerance and the conditions behind it. Wear, position, temperature, condition and adjustment can affect mechanical timekeeping. Breitling’s FAQ provides its product-specific figures.
What happens when you stop wearing one?
An automatic can run out of stored power
An automatic keeps running on its power reserve after you take it off. That reserve varies by movement and model. Patek Philippe says its self-winding movements generally have a reserve of 38–48 hours, with exceptions for some models (publication year not stated on the source page). If an automatic has stopped, restart and set it according to its manual; check that watch’s instructions for the correct procedure. Patek Philippe’s Watch Care recommendations give its reserve range, while Longines explains why an unworn automatic eventually stops.

A quartz watch does not need winding, but its battery has limits
Patek Philippe states that the battery life for its quartz movements is two to three years (publication year not stated on the source page); this is maker guidance, not a guarantee for every quartz watch. Battery life and replacement arrangements vary by model. Patek Philippe directs owners to an authorized retailer for replacement. Use the battery specified for the particular watch, and follow its maker’s replacement guidance rather than assuming a generic battery or do-it-yourself opening procedure is suitable. Patek Philippe’s Watch Care recommendations explain its battery guidance.

Neither movement type is maintenance-free. A quartz watch avoids regular winding but needs battery attention when its power source is depleted. An automatic has no battery in the usual mechanical design, but it has a finite power reserve and can stop while stored.

Service intervals are manufacturer- and model-specific. Patek Philippe recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an official service center or authorized retailer (publication year not stated on the source page). That is Patek Philippe’s recommendation, not a universal schedule; consult the guidance for the watch you own. The same care page advises avoiding shocks, prolonged vibrations, extreme temperature changes and magnetic fields where possible. See Patek Philippe’s Watch Care recommendations.

How to compare two specific watches
- Check the movement specification. Confirm that each listing says quartz or automatic; “mechanical” alone does not necessarily mean self-winding.
- Compare stated accuracy on its own terms. Note the unit and conditions, and avoid treating a brand-specific figure as typical of every watch using that movement.
- For an automatic, check the power reserve. Use the exact model’s specification to judge how long it may keep running off the wrist.
- For quartz, check battery guidance. Find the maker’s expected battery life and recommended replacement channel for that model.
- Read the care and service advice. Use the watchmaker’s schedule and instructions rather than applying another brand’s interval.
