The Breguet Classique 5157 makes a strong case for keeping a watch’s display to the essentials: hours and minutes. Its silvered, hand-guilloché dial, Roman numerals and blue Breguet hands give that spare layout plenty to look at, while the current 38 mm gold case measures just 5.5 mm thick. The trade-off is equally clear: there is no date or seconds hand, and its 3 BAR water resistance and alligator strap call for more care than a typical everyday watch.
What the Classique 5157 is—and what it displays
Breguet currently lists the Classique 5157 in two references: the 18K rose-gold 5157BR/11/9V6 and 18K white-gold 5157BB/11/9V6. Both use automatic caliber 502.3 and show only hours and minutes. There is no date window and no seconds hand, leaving the dial’s pattern and typography undisturbed.

The dial is silvered and hand-guilloché, with Roman numerals and blued, hollow-tipped Breguet hands (described by the brand as hollow-apple hands). A secret signature adds another detail without changing the intentionally uncluttered display. Monochrome’s 2018 review also draws attention to the dial’s engine-turned decoration and secret signature, and calls the watch an example of Breguet’s “savoir-faire.” Monochrome Watches, 2018-07-13.

That depends on whether you want a watch to report more than the time. The absence of a date and seconds display is not a missing complication that can be overlooked; it is the point of the design. If you regularly need to check seconds or use a date at a glance, the 5157 will not do that job. If you prefer a calm dial and value its hand-worked decoration, the restricted display makes sense: the visual interest comes from the guilloché, hands and case details rather than extra indications.

Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink says he likes the watch’s lack of a seconds hand and date, and reports that the watch felt comfortable even with short sleeves. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee about how it will sit on every wrist. Fratello Watches, “Hands-On Breguet Classique 5157 Review — The One I Want”.
How does the 38 mm Breguet 5157 wear?
Breguet’s current specification gives the case a 38 mm diameter, 5.5 mm thickness and 20 mm lug width. The slim profile is central to its dress-watch character: it is designed to sit close to the wrist and slide beneath a cuff. Fratello’s review of the rose-gold example lists a 44 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 5.4 mm thickness; its thickness figure differs slightly from the brand’s current specification.
A 38 mm diameter does not tell the whole fit story. Monochrome notes that the long, welded lugs can make the watch wear larger than its diameter suggests. That observation is useful if your wrist is short across the top, but it is not a substitute for trying the watch on: wrist shape and personal fit preferences matter.

The case adds texture without adding dial clutter. Monochrome highlights the fluted caseband, welded lugs and screw-pins as details that reward a closer look. The sapphire caseback exposes the movement, though the watch’s visual emphasis remains on the decorated front.
Caliber 502.3: thin, automatic and 45-hour reserve
The current Breguet product page specifies automatic caliber 502.3 with a 45-hour power reserve, 3 Hz frequency, flat silicon balance spring and 162 components. The movement is 2.4 mm thick and 27.4 mm wide. These are the current official specifications; older review tables do not all report the same component count.
For example, Fratello lists 140 components and 35 jewels for the watch it reviewed, while Monochrome’s 2018 table also lists 35 jewels. Breguet’s current page lists 162 components and does not state a jewel count. Those figures should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than combined as if they were one specification.
The official manual says to start the watch by turning the crown forward 30 to 35 times in position 1. Once fully wound, Breguet says it will run for about 45 hours off the wrist; while worn, the movement rewinds automatically. To set the time, pull the crown to position 2, turn the hands clockwise, then push the crown back to position 1. Breguet’s 5157 operating manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDaily-use trade-offs: water resistance, crown and strap
The 5157 has a non-screwed crown and a 3 BAR water-resistance rating. That specification is not a reason to treat a thin gold dress watch as a swimming or shower watch. The product page establishes the rating, but does not set out a more detailed activity guide. For wet conditions, follow Breguet’s current care guidance rather than assuming the rating makes routine water exposure advisable.
Breguet specifies an alligator strap and an ardillon buckle. The rose-gold version has a rose-gold buckle; the white-gold version has a white-gold buckle. The listed 20 mm lug width is a useful starting point when considering a replacement strap, but width alone does not confirm that a particular strap or attachment will fit. Check the watch’s actual attachment and buckle arrangement before buying one.
The gold case and alligator strap also make this a watch to handle with care. The supplied sources establish those materials, not a maintenance schedule or repair cost; ask an authorized Breguet point of sale for advice on care and service for a specific watch.
Price and what the available figures mean
Breguet’s current product page does not publish a price for either listed 5157 reference; it directs customers to contact a point of sale. Older figures are not a substitute for a current local quote: Fratello reported EUR 18,400 in its review, while Monochrome listed EUR 18,300 for rose gold and EUR 18,300 for white gold in its 2018 review. Monochrome’s same 2018 table listed EUR 17,300 for a yellow-gold version; these are historical review prices, not current offers or guidance.

Verdict: restraint with a distinctly Breguet character
The 5157 is compelling when a buyer wants a very slim gold watch whose richness comes from craft rather than complication. The hand-guilloché dial and signature Breguet details give its two-hand layout depth; the absent date and seconds hand, 45-hour reserve, modest water resistance and precious materials make its priorities—and its compromises—plain. It is best suited to someone who values that focused dress-watch role over maximum day-to-day versatility.
