Current sizes and movement choices
In the cited current large references, the case measures 44.4 mm long by 24.4 mm wide and 8.6 mm thick. A cited mini jewelry reference measures 28 mm by 15.2 mm and 6.5 mm thick. Those dimensions create two substantially different wearing experiences: the large case emphasizes the Américaine’s vertical, curved profile, while the mini is a compact jewelry watch with much less wrist coverage.

Quartz versus self-winding
The collection is not mechanically uniform. The cited mini uses quartz, a practical choice for a small jewelry case, while the large rose-gold, yellow-gold and steel examples use self-winding mechanical movements. The yellow-gold listing states a 39-hour power reserve, meaning the watch can run for roughly that period when fully wound before it stops if it is not rewound or worn.

Movement type should therefore be treated as a buying decision separate from case shape. A quartz mini and a large automatic are different in size, servicing expectations and wearing purpose; neither is a direct substitute for the other.

How the large and mini references differ on the wrist
The large 44.4 mm case delivers the clearest expression of the Américaine’s stretched design. Its 24.4 mm width keeps the watch relatively narrow for its length, preserving the vertical Tank composition rather than turning it into a broad square. At 8.6 mm thick, it remains a dress-watch-sized object while still providing space for an automatic movement.
The 28 mm by 15.2 mm mini is 6.5 mm thick and is specified with a quartz movement and extensive diamond setting. Its proportions make it a jewelry-led interpretation rather than a scaled-down mechanical version of the large watch. Comparing the two only by diameter misses the more important differences in length, width, movement and materials.

Can you replace or change the strap?
Yes. Representative Tank Américaine references use interchangeable strap or buckle systems, so changing the strap can alter the watch’s appearance and provide a replacement option when the original strap is worn.

Check these points before ordering
- Match the exact Tank Américaine reference, not just the collection name.
- Confirm the strap’s lug or end-link dimensions and the folding-buckle interface.
- Verify whether the replacement includes the correct Cartier-compatible buckle hardware or is intended to use the existing buckle.
- Check the material and finish against the case: rose gold, yellow gold, steel and white gold are not interchangeable simply because the case length is similar.
The large steel example pairs a navy alligator strap with an interchangeable steel folding buckle, while the cited rose-gold example uses an interchangeable 18K rose-gold folding buckle. Those details show why fit and hardware matter as much as strap width. A strap that physically fits the case may still be unsuitable if its end links, spring bars or buckle connection do not match the reference.

Water resistance and everyday use
The cited references specify sapphire crystal and 3-bar water resistance, approximately 30 metres or 100 feet. That is ordinary daily-wear water resistance, not a dive-watch rating. The figure describes the watch’s tested resistance level; it should not be read as permission to use the Tank Américaine for diving or other high-pressure water activity.
Sapphire protects the dial from scratches better than many softer crystal materials, but it does not change the water-resistance rating. Treat the rating and the crystal specification as separate parts of the watch’s construction.
Prices vary by reference and market
Cartier’s displayed prices show why the Tank Américaine cannot be assigned one meaningful collection-wide price. A cited diamond-set white-gold mini listing displays $70,000. A cited Canadian large rose-gold model displays C$25,600. These are listing prices for specific references and markets, not interchangeable prices for every Tank Américaine.
