Grand Seiko collector Daniel Yong, known online as @MrGrandSeiko, does not choose watches by movement specifications alone. In a Time+Tide interview published November 29, 2021, he said aesthetics matter more to him than technicalities, while highlighting Spring Drive and 9F quartz as the technologies that keep him interested. His standout anniversary references were the SBGW258 and SLGH002.
Those are personal selections, not a definitive brand ranking, and the models named in the 2021 interview should not be assumed to be currently available. For a current point of comparison, Grand Seiko’s June 24, 2026 Evolution 9 update adds five Spring Drive U.F.A. references and four high-beat mechanical references.

Yong’s two standout Grand Seiko watches
SBGW258: a modern re-creation of the first Grand Seiko
Yong singled out the SBGW258 as a re-creation of the first Grand Seiko. He particularly valued the combination of a historically informed design, a modern case size and an exhibition caseback. It is best understood as a design-led choice: the appeal is the relationship between the original inspiration and contemporary wearability, rather than a claim that it is technically superior to every other Grand Seiko.
SLGH002: a new gold interpretation of the Grammar of Design
He described the SLGH002 as an entirely new gold design that emphasizes Grand Seiko’s “Grammar of Design.” This is the contrasting pick: instead of recreating an early model, it uses the brand’s case and surface-language principles in a more contemporary precious-metal execution.

Which Grand Seiko movement is best?
There is no single best movement for every owner. The practical choice is between the behavior you want on the wrist: Spring Drive’s continuously gliding seconds hand, a conventional mechanical seconds hand and winding experience, or the near-maintenance-light accuracy of quartz. Yong owns manual-wind 9S64 and 9S63 watches, yet says Spring Drive and 9F quartz are the movements that keep him engaged.
Spring Drive: mainspring power with quartz regulation
Grand Seiko’s 9R Spring Drive is neither a conventional battery-powered quartz watch nor a purely mechanical watch. An unwinding mainspring turns a glide wheel; that wheel generates electricity for a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit, while an electromagnetic brake regulates the wheel. The result is a seconds hand that moves continuously and silently.

For Yong, the visual effect is the point. He compared the seconds hand’s motion to “watching Roger Federer belt a winning backhand down the line followed with a flick of his locks.” Grand Seiko describes the same behavior as a smooth, silent glide rather than the ticking of quartz or the beat of a traditional mechanical watch.
9S mechanical: tactile, traditional and technically varied
Grand Seiko’s 9S family covers both hand-wound and automatic mechanical watches. Yong’s own 9S64 and 9S63 examples show why the winding interaction can matter as much as a specification sheet: a manual-wind watch makes the daily act of winding part of ownership. High-beat versions add a faster balance frequency, but their published accuracy and power reserve must be read as the manufacturer’s stated measures, not as a universal guarantee for every watch.
9F quartz: precision with a different kind of appeal
Yong identifies 9F quartz as another reason he remains interested in Grand Seiko. The attraction is not the mechanical theater of a traditional movement; it is the engineering, legibility and dependable quartz behavior. If you want a Grand Seiko primarily for its dial, case finishing and low-intervention timekeeping, 9F deserves consideration alongside Spring Drive and 9S.
Current 2026 comparison: Evolution 9 U.F.A. Spring Drive versus high-beat mechanical
Grand Seiko’s June 24, 2026 announcement refreshed nine Evolution 9 references. The five Spring Drive U.F.A. models are SLGB007, SLGB009, SLGB011, SLGB013 and SLGB015; the four mechanical models are SLGH029, SLGH031, SLGH033 and SLGH035. Grand Seiko said the Spring Drive watches would begin reaching boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in September 2026, with the mechanical watches beginning in October 2026. Timing and stock can vary by market.

Grand Seiko calls the 9RB2 the most accurate mainspring-powered wristwatch movement on the market based on its own research as of June 2026. That is a company claim, not an independent market-wide test. The 9RB2 annual figure and the 9SA5 daily figure also use different measurement periods and methods, so they are not directly interchangeable performance tests.
How to choose among Yong’s approach and the current models
Choose Spring Drive if the seconds hand is the deciding feature
- You want a silent, uninterrupted glide rather than a visible tick or mechanical beat.
- You prefer mainspring power but want quartz-based regulation.
- The 9RB2’s manufacturer-stated annual accuracy and 72-hour autonomy fit your priorities.
Choose high-beat 9S if mechanical operation comes first
- You want a conventional mechanical movement and the character of a 36,000-vibrations-per-hour calibre.
- An 80-hour stated power reserve matters more than Spring Drive’s glide.
- You understand that +5 to −3 seconds per day is a manufacturer specification, not a promise of identical results in every wearing condition.
Choose 9F quartz if low-intervention ownership is the goal
- You care most about the watch’s design, finishing and straightforward quartz timekeeping.
- You do not need a mechanical winding ritual or Spring Drive’s hybrid architecture.
Choose by design before movement if you share Yong’s priorities
Yong’s comments are a useful corrective to movement-only rankings. Compare the case proportions, dial, finishing, metal, wrist fit and historical or contemporary design language first. Then use movement behavior, accuracy specification and power reserve to separate watches that already appeal visually.
Ownership and servicing
Grand Seiko’s English manual recommends asking the retailer about inspection and overhaul and advises cleaning and overhaul within three to four years of purchase, depending on use conditions. That is qualified manufacturer guidance: confirm the current instructions for the exact reference and obtain local service advice, particularly for older or discontinued watches.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Grand Seiko watches did @MrGrandSeiko recommend?
In a November 29, 2021 Time+Tide interview, Daniel Yong highlighted the SBGW258 and SLGH002 among the 60th-anniversary special editions. His choices were personal preferences, and current availability is not established by that interview.
Is Spring Drive mechanical or quartz?
Spring Drive is mainspring-powered and quartz-regulated. Its glide wheel generates electricity for a quartz oscillator and circuit, while an electromagnetic brake regulates the wheel; it is not a battery-powered conventional quartz watch.
What is the most accurate current Grand Seiko movement?
Grand Seiko’s June 2026 specification gives Calibre 9RB2 an annual accuracy of ±20 seconds and calls it the most accurate mainspring-powered wristwatch movement based on the company’s own research as of June 2026. No independent market-wide comparison is established here.
The Bottom Line
Yong’s selections point to two durable lessons: choose the design that makes you want to wear the watch, then choose the movement behavior you will enjoy every day. His SBGW258 and SLGH002 picks explain the design-first view; the current 9RB2 and 9SA5 references show how Spring Drive U.F.A. and high-beat mechanical options differ in operation, stated accuracy and power reserve.
