Its 39 mm case is 12.8 mm thick, and its independently jumping local-hour hand makes time-zone changes practical. Reviewers praise the slimmer proportions, though Monochrome flags a legibility concern: the gilt GMT hand can blend into the dial. These conclusions draw on Tudor’s specifications and attributed hands-on reviews, not an independent physical test.
What makes the Black Bay 58 GMT good for travel?
It uses a so-called “flyer” or traveller’s GMT movement: the local hour hand moves independently in one-hour steps, while the 24-hour hand continues to track a second time zone. The date is synchronized with the jumping hour hand, so changing local time does not require resetting the 24-hour hand. A bidirectional 24-hour bezel adds another way to keep track of a third zone by adjusting the bezel relative to the 24-hour hand.

Tudor’s press kit lists centre jumping-hour, 24-hour, minute and seconds hands, an instantaneous date, and stop-seconds. In practical terms, a traveller can adjust the local hour in one-hour increments while preserving the reference time. These are manufacturer specifications rather than an independent timing test. Tudor’s press kit describes the movement operation.

Tudor specifies a 39 mm steel case, 12.8 mm thick, with a 20 mm lug width. Hodinkee reports a 47.8 mm lug-to-lug span and says the watch wears much like a Black Bay 58. Its reviewer regards the case as a substantial improvement in everyday ergonomics over Tudor’s thicker GMT alternatives. Monochrome also considers the reduced thickness a meaningful proportion change.

For context, Hodinkee gives the Black Bay GMT dimensions as 41 × 14.6 × 50 mm and the Black Bay Pro as 39 mm wide and 14.6 mm thick. Those comparison measurements are the reviewer’s figures; they are not a set of current Tudor catalog specifications for all references. The 58 GMT is thinner on those figures, but case numbers alone cannot predict comfort: wrist shape, bracelet fit and personal preference matter. Try it on if possible. Hodinkee’s hands-on review discusses the fit and comparison.
What are the specifications, and what do they mean?
| Specification | Black Bay 58 GMT | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 39 mm diameter; 12.8 mm thick; 20 mm lug width (Tudor) | A comparatively compact, slimmer GMT case; the lug width identifies the nominal strap width, not guaranteed aftermarket compatibility. |
| Water resistance | 200 m (Tudor) | A substantial stated rating, but not a blanket recommendation for every water activity. Follow Tudor’s instructions for use and maintenance. |
| Movement | MT5450-U, self-winding, integrated GMT (Tudor) | Combines the jumping local-hour function with a 24-hour second-time-zone hand. |
| Power reserve | 65 hours (Tudor) | Tudor’s stated reserve; this is not a separately measured result here. |
| Certification and magnetic resistance | COSC and METAS certification; Tudor specifies testing at 15,000 gauss | Tudor says its METAS certification covers precision, magnetic-field resistance, waterproofness and power reserve. |
| Bezel and dial | Black dial with gilt markers; bidirectional 24-hour bezel with black-and-burgundy anodized aluminum insert (Tudor) | The dark red-and-black bezel supplies the watch’s distinctive “Coke” color treatment. |
| Bracelet and strap | Steel bracelet with T-fit clasp, or a fitted rubber-strap configuration (Tudor) | The bracelet’s clasp offers adjustment; confirm the exact reference and configuration when comparing listings. |
Tudor’s press kit additionally lists a silicon balance spring, 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz), a 30.3 mm movement diameter, 6.14 mm movement thickness and 34 jewels. These are manufacturer-published technical details, not independent test findings. Tudor describes METAS as covering the complete watch’s precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve; the 15,000-gauss figure and 65-hour reserve are part of Tudor’s explanation of this watch’s certification. Tudor’s METAS overview explains its stated scope.

The 200 m rating is a specification, not an instruction to assume every activity is appropriate; consult Tudor’s instructions for use and maintenance. Tudor’s product page also states a five-year transferable guarantee, with no registration or periodic maintenance checks required. Its press kit recommends service approximately every ten years depending on model and daily use; that is Tudor’s guidance, not a universal service requirement. The product page for bracelet reference M7939G1A0NRU-0001 lists current product details and US suggested retail pricing, which Tudor says it may change. Check that page for the exact current price and configuration before buying.

GMT-hand contrast
Monochrome’s main criticism is that the gilt GMT hand does not stand out strongly against the dial, making a quick glance at the second time zone less immediate. This is a reviewer’s subjective legibility assessment; individual eyesight and lighting conditions can affect how noticeable the issue is. If you rely on frequent, fast reads of home time, inspect the hand in person under the conditions in which you expect to use it. Monochrome’s review discusses the contrast and proportions.

- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
Fit remains personal
The smaller dimensions address a common drawback of bulkier GMT options, but do not guarantee that the watch will suit every wrist. The reported lug-to-lug span, bracelet adjustment and the way the case sits on your wrist are as relevant as diameter. A 20 mm lug width also does not establish that any third-party strap will fit correctly; interface shape and clearance must be checked.
How does it compare with the Black Bay GMT and Black Bay Pro?
| Model | Case dimensions cited | GMT operation | What stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Bay 58 GMT | 39 mm × 12.8 mm; 47.8 mm lug-to-lug (Tudor diameter/thickness; Hodinkee lug-to-lug) | Jumping local hour; 24-hour hand retains the second zone | More compact, thinner profile in the cited comparisons; black-and-burgundy bezel, with reviewer-noted GMT-hand contrast caveat. |
| Black Bay GMT | 41 × 14.6 × 50 mm (Hodinkee comparison) | not stated in the cited comparison | Larger and thicker dimensions than the 58 GMT in Hodinkee’s comparison. |
| Black Bay Pro | 39 mm diameter and 14.6 mm thick (Hodinkee comparison) | not stated in the cited comparison | Same cited diameter as the 58 GMT but greater thickness. |
The cited comparison does not establish current prices for the Black Bay GMT or Black Bay Pro, or comparable bracelet and strap prices across all three models. Tudor’s US listings are suggested retail prices that can change, so compare the exact market, reference and configuration on the current product pages rather than relying on launch coverage.

Is the Black Bay 58 GMT worth choosing?
For a buyer who wants a compact Tudor with a genuinely useful traveller’s GMT function, the 58 GMT makes a strong case. Tudor’s specifications combine a 39 mm, 12.8 mm case with 200 m stated water resistance, a 65-hour reserve and COSC/METAS certification. Hodinkee and Monochrome both view the reduced thickness and proportions positively. The key personal question is whether the gilt GMT hand is easy enough for you to read quickly.
GQ’s one-week hands-on article characterized it as the smaller, thinner Tudor GMT many buyers had been seeking and praised its construction and functionality; its reported launch prices of $4,600 on bracelet and $4,400 on rubber were historical launch prices, not current pricing. GQ’s hands-on account provides that launch-era perspective. For a current purchase decision, verify Tudor’s live price for the exact region and strap configuration, then try the watch on if you can.
