Its restrained design, reported 100 m water resistance and review-era price made it Pinion’s entry-level option in 2018, but those old prices are not current offers. The available evidence does not establish whether the original Atom is still sold new, or its current price or warranty terms.
What is the Pinion Atom?
This review concerns the original Pinion Atom watch, not Pinion’s bicycle drivetrain systems. In 2018, reviewers positioned it as a more accessible way into the British brand’s watch collection. One notable distinction was its Miyota 9015: reviews described other Pinion models as using Swiss movements, while the Atom’s automatic calibre is Japanese.
Sam Kessler wrote in his 12 February 2018 Oracle Time hands-on review, “The ATOM is every bit a Pinion and every bit of a great – not to mention affordable – watch.” That affordability judgment referred to the historical price at the time, not today’s market.

How does the Atom wear and look?
The Atom’s design is deliberately restrained and tool-watch oriented. Worn & Wound points to a bead-blasted case, stepped bezel, textured central dial, Arabic numerals, and luminous hands and markers. The texture gives the dial visual interest without displacing the clear, functional layout.

- 41mm black case
- 8 inch brown strap
- Black dial
- Sapphire lens
- Water resistant up to 200 meters
Oracle Time praised the finish and wearable proportions, though Kessler said he would personally have preferred a larger 44 mm option. That is a matter of fit preference, not a flaw in the watch. The 41 mm diameter and 49 mm lug-to-lug measurement are useful starting points, but wrist shape and personal taste will determine how it sits.
Fratello found the large crown easy to operate and the leather strap comfortable. Its reviewer also noted that the date display may not appeal to everyone. These are hands-on reviewer impressions, not laboratory findings.

What does the Miyota 9015 mean for value?
The movement choice helps explain why the Atom was priced below some other Pinion watches discussed in 2018 reviews: it used a Japanese Miyota 9015 where those models used Swiss movements. Worn & Wound framed it as an entry-level Pinion. That difference is relevant, but movement origin alone cannot settle whether a watch is good value.
A fair assessment also considers the case and its finishing, dial, hands, crown, strap, buckle, legibility, fit, and the price actually available to you. The 2018 comparisons with watches such as the Sinn 104 and lower-priced microbrands are historical; their quoted price context should not be treated as a present-day comparison.

Is the Atom suitable for swimming?
Reviews report 100 m water resistance, but Fratello specifically cautioned that the supplied calf-leather strap is not suitable for swimming. If you intend to wear the watch in water, use an appropriate replacement strap and confirm the watch’s condition and water resistance with a qualified watch professional; a review-era specification does not establish the condition of an individual watch years later.
Can you change the Pinion Atom strap?
The Atom’s reported 20 mm lug width gives you a clear starting point for finding a replacement. Before ordering a 20 mm watch strap, confirm the lug width on the specific watch, the attachment type, and the strap length you need. Fratello and Worn & Wound describe the original supplied strap as leather; neither fact confirms what may be included with a particular secondhand example.

Should you buy an original Pinion Atom now?
The 2018 reviews describe an appealingly legible, compact tool-style watch with considered finishing and an automatic movement from a known Japanese maker. Whether it makes sense today depends on the specific watch’s condition, service history, included strap and accessories, and asking price. The official Pinion archive contains Atom-related product material but does not establish current stock or price; current availability and warranty terms are not confirmed by the review-era sources.
