Short answer: Current 42 mm Hermès H08 models are rated to 10 bar, but that rating applies only while the case, crystal, crown and gaskets remain in sound, tested condition. You can use an H08 with ordinary water when the crown is fully secured, yet 10 bar is not a permanent “waterproof” promise, a depth guarantee or permission to operate controls underwater. Treat swimming, salt water, impacts, service openings and an unknown service history as reasons to be more cautious.
What the H08’s 10 bar rating actually tells you
Hermès lists its cited current 42 mm H08 mechanical self-winding models with 10 bar water resistance. Bar is a pressure unit: 10 bar describes the pressure level used in a water-resistance test on a watch in appropriate condition. It does not mean every H08 can safely reach a literal 100-metre depth, nor does it promise the same performance after years of wear, a knock, or a case opening.

Water resistance is a property of the complete sealed system. Hermès identifies the hermetically sealed case, glass, winding crown and numerous gaskets as the components involved. Gaskets age, crowns can be damaged, and a crystal or case can lose its seal after impact. Once a watch has been opened for service, resistance must be tested and re-established; the printed rating alone is not enough.
The H08 name covers multiple references. Case dimensions, movement specifications and strap combinations can vary, so check the reference engraved on your watch or its warranty and technical documents before applying a specification to it. The 10 bar figure in this article is the published rating for the cited 42 mm models, not a claim that every H08 variant has identical construction.

Swimming, showering and everyday water
Swimming in a pool or calm open water
An H08 with intact, recently verified seals and a fully secured crown can be used around ordinary water within the conditions represented by its 10 bar rating. That makes recreational swimming a reasonable use for a sound example, particularly on a rubber strap. Keep the crown closed, do not press or turn any control in the water, and avoid treating the watch as suitable for every aquatic activity simply because “10 bar” appears on the dial or paperwork.
Vigorous strokes, diving, jumping and contact with the pool wall add shock or sudden pressure that a static rating does not describe. If the watch has an unknown service history, has been dropped, or has recently been opened, remove it until a resistance test confirms its condition.
Fresh water versus salt or chlorinated water
Salt and chlorinated water should be treated as corrosive or contaminating environments rather than as interchangeable with a quick splash. After sea-water immersion, Hermès gives a specific instruction: “If your Hermès timepiece is immersed in sea water it should be rinsed with fresh water after use and dried.” Rinsing removes salt that could remain around the case, crown, clasp or strap. Pool water should receive the same practical attention, even though the cited instruction specifically mentions sea water.

Hermès’ 10 bar listing supports ordinary water exposure when the watch is in sound condition; it does not establish a separate shower approval. A shower combines hot water, spray, soap and rapid temperature changes, while the wearer may accidentally operate the crown. The conservative choice is to remove the H08 before showering. If it is exposed briefly, keep the crown secured, do not manipulate controls, and rinse and dry it afterward rather than assuming that a pressure number makes shower use risk-free.

- ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
- IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
- OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
- CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.
When not to rely on the rating
- After a hard impact, fall or collision involving the case or crystal.
- After the case has been opened, unless a water-resistance test has been completed.
- When you see condensation under the crystal.
- When the crown feels unusually loose, rough or difficult to secure.
- When seals have not been checked for the interval recommended for your market or when the service history is unknown.
In any of these situations, keep the watch away from water and arrange testing by Hermès or a qualified watchmaker. Do not try to prove the seal by putting the watch in a sink or pressing the crown underwater.
Activity and strap choices
H08 references use rubber or fabric straps, and the exact reference determines which is fitted. Hermès’ general care guidance says a leather-strapped watch is not advisable for sport and recommends a metal or rubber strap instead. For an H08, the rubber configuration is therefore the sensible choice for swimming and exercise; fabric may be less convenient to rinse and dry after immersion.
A suitable strap does not increase the case’s pressure rating. The crown, gaskets, crystal, clasp and case remain the limiting components, and a strap can fail independently. Inspect the strap and clasp before an activity where dropping the watch would be costly, and replace worn components through an appropriate service channel.
| Situation | Practical approach | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| Brief fresh-water splash | Acceptable for a sound watch with the crown secured; dry the exterior. | The rating assumes an intact sealed case, not an aging or damaged one. |
| Recreational swimming | Reasonable for a recently tested watch; do not operate the crown or pushers. | Movement and impacts add risks that a static pressure test does not cover. |
| Sea-water immersion | Rinse gently with fresh water after use and dry with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. | Salt residue can remain around seals, case joints, clasp and strap. |
| Shower or hot water | Removing the watch is the safest option; if exposed, keep controls secured and clean afterward. | Hermès’ 10 bar listing does not constitute a specific shower endorsement. |
| Diving, jumping or impact-heavy sport | Avoid relying on the rating; use a purpose-selected instrument and have the H08 tested after any impact. | Sudden shocks and pressure changes are different from the stated test condition. |
How to rinse and clean an H08 after salt water
Follow Hermès’ sea-water instruction promptly. The goal is to remove residue without forcing water or chemicals past a compromised seal.

- Secure the controls. Confirm that the crown is fully closed. Do not press, pull or turn the crown or any pushers while the watch is wet.
- Rinse with fresh water. Use a gentle flow rather than a high-pressure jet. If the watch has suffered an impact or you suspect a seal problem, do not rinse it; keep it dry and seek testing instead.
- Dry the exterior. Pat and wipe with a soft, non-abrasive cloth, paying attention to the caseback, crown area, clasp and strap junctions.
- Let residual moisture evaporate. Place the watch in a dry, ventilated area. Do not use a hair dryer, heater or intense sunlight to force drying.
- Check for warning signs. Condensation, a loose crown, unusual crown resistance or persistent moisture requires immediate professional attention and no further water exposure.
For routine surface dust or fingerprints, use a clean, soft, non-abrasive cloth. Hermès’ cited guidance does not prescribe a particular cleaning chemical or branded cloth. Keep household solvents, alcohol, abrasive polish and other unapproved chemicals away from the case, coatings, gaskets and strap. Do not scrub the anti-reflective sapphire crystal or try to clean inside the case yourself.
Construction details that affect care
One Hermès technical characteristics sheet describes an H08 with a cushion-shaped 39 x 39 mm case, a black DLC-treated titanium caseback, a rose-gold case middle, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the H1837 self-winding movement and a rubber or fabric strap. That sheet gives a 45-hour power reserve and was accessed in 2026. Other current H08 product pages identify approximately 50 hours for some references, so neither reserve figure should be generalized across the family.
The sapphire crystal is highly scratch resistant compared with many alternatives, but it is not proof against impact. A strike can damage a crystal or its seal without leaving an obvious mark. DLC-treated titanium, rose-gold components and anti-reflective coatings also make abrasive polishing or aggressive chemicals a poor choice for home care.
| Specification or feature | What is established | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | 10 bar for the cited current 42 mm H08 models | Applies only to a watch in sound, tested condition; do not convert it into a guaranteed depth. |
| Case example | Cushion-shaped 39 x 39 mm case | From one technical sheet; H08 references vary. |
| Caseback and middle | Black DLC-treated titanium caseback with rose-gold case middle | From the same technical sheet; verify the exact reference. |
| Crystal | Anti-reflective sapphire | Protect it from impact and abrasive cleaning. |
| Movement | H1837 self-winding movement | Listed on the cited technical sheet. |
| Power reserve | 45 hours on one technical sheet; approximately 50 hours on some current product pages | Do not apply one reserve figure to every H08 variant. |
| Straps | Rubber or fabric on the cited construction | Reference-specific; rubber is the more practical choice for water and exercise. |
How often should the seals be checked?
There is no single interval published across all Hermès markets. The English Hermès care page recommends testing seals annually when the watch is designed for and used in water. A French Hermès care page recommends a water-resistance check every two years and mechanical-watch servicing every five years. These are official regional instructions that can change, so use the current guidance for your country and exact reference rather than assuming one universal schedule.

Arrange an earlier check whenever the watch has been hit, opened, exposed to condensation, or developed unusual crown resistance. Tell the service provider how you use the watch—swimming, salt water, sport or mostly desk wear—so the test and gasket inspection reflect the actual risk.
What a proper check is for
A resistance test is intended to establish whether the sealed case still meets the applicable specification. It is not a substitute for inspecting a damaged crystal, crown or case. If a watch fails, do not keep using it in water while waiting for a later service appointment; the rating is no longer a safe assumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage between wears
Hermès recommends keeping the watch in its original box or in a case designed for the purpose, such as a watch-winding box for an automatic mechanical watch. Store it in a well-ventilated place away from humidity, heat and prolonged direct sunlight, and prevent contact with other watches that could scratch the case or crystal.
A winder is optional storage equipment, not a water-resistance device and not a replacement for servicing. If you do not use one, letting the automatic movement stop is not itself a problem; set the watch again according to the instructions before wearing it. Keep the watch clean and completely dry before closing it in a case.

What to do if something goes wrong
Condensation under the crystal
Stop all water exposure and avoid operating the crown. Condensation indicates that moisture may have entered the case or that temperature changes have exposed a sealing problem. Have Hermès or a qualified watchmaker inspect it promptly; do not place it on a radiator or open the case at home.
The crown will not close normally
Do not force it and do not wear the watch in water. A damaged thread, crown tube or gasket can compromise the case even when the watch looks dry. Professional examination is required before the 10 bar rating can be trusted again.
The watch was dropped or struck
Remove it from water use until the case, crystal, crown and gaskets have been checked. A visible lack of damage does not prove that the seal survived the impact.
Salt residue remains after rinsing
Use another gentle fresh-water rinse and a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Do not scrape deposits with a metal tool or apply solvent. If residue is trapped around the crown, clasp or case joint, have it cleaned during a professional inspection rather than forcing the part.
A practical H08 water-use checklist
- Confirm the exact H08 reference and its strap material.
- Check that the crown is fully secured before any water exposure.
- Use a recently tested watch for swimming; avoid water when service history is unknown.
- Never operate the crown or pushers underwater.
- Remove the watch for showers and hot water when possible.
- Rinse with fresh water and dry after sea-water immersion.
- Use only a soft, non-abrasive cloth for routine cleaning.
- Keep solvents, alcohol, abrasive polish and household chemicals away from seals, coatings and straps.
- Stop water use after an impact, case opening, condensation or abnormal crown behavior.
- Follow the current Hermès service interval for your market; schedule an earlier test after any warning sign.
The useful way to think about the H08 is not “waterproof” versus “not waterproof.” It is a 10 bar watch whose protection depends on a maintained, sealed case and careful handling. Keep the crown secured, choose the rubber configuration for wet activity, rinse salt water with fresh water, and treat any impact, opening or moisture warning as a reason to test the watch before using it around water again.
