The Hermès H08 is a mechanical self-winding watch built around the H1837 calibre. On the standard, non-chronograph model, the crown winds the movement in position 1, corrects the date in position 2 and stops the hands for time-setting in position 3. The H08 family includes different case sizes and a chronograph, so confirm your reference before applying specifications or operating any pushers.
Identify your H08 before setting it
Hermès sells several H08 configurations. The setting sequence below describes the three-position crown used for the standard H08. A chronograph H08 still uses the H1837 self-winding movement, but it adds chronograph pushers and has different published specifications. Look at the dial, case dimensions and reference information before quoting its power reserve or water-resistance rating.

| Configuration | Published case presentation | Movement and reserve | Dial functions and date | Published water resistance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard H08 technical sheet | 39 × 39 mm cushion case | H1837 mechanical self-winding; 45-hour power reserve | Hours, minutes, seconds; date between 4 and 5 o’clock | The technical sheet cited here does not state a bar rating |
| H08 Chronographe current Hermès USA listing | 45 mm lug-to-lug / 41 mm case-width presentation | H1837 mechanical self-winding monopusher chronograph; 46-hour power reserve | Chronograph, small seconds at 3 o’clock; date at 4:30 | 10 bar |
The 45-hour and 46-hour figures are not a contradiction. They describe different H08 listings. Use the reserve printed for your exact variant rather than treating one number as universal across the collection.

What each crown position does
For the non-chronograph H08, the crown has three operating positions. Position 1 is fully pushed in, position 2 is the intermediate date-setting position and position 3 is fully pulled out for time correction.

| Crown position | How to identify it | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crown fully pushed home | Turn clockwise for manual winding | The movement receives power and the watch runs; normal wrist motion continues automatic winding |
| 2 | Crown pulled out one click | Turn clockwise | Quick correction of the date |
| 3 | Crown pulled out fully | Turn counter-clockwise to set the hands | The hands stop while you set the time |
The winding direction matters: the Hermès instructions specify clockwise turns in position 1. Date correction is also clockwise, while time correction is performed counter-clockwise. Do not infer the direction from another watch in your collection.
Restart a stopped H08
A stopped H08 has exhausted its stored power. Manual winding is the appropriate way to restart it; the watch is still self-winding once it is running. Hermès does not require a watch winder for this procedure.
- Dry the watch and your hands. Do not handle the crown while it is wet or being splashed.
- Release a screw-lock crown if your case has one. Turn the crown counter-clockwise between thumb and forefinger until it disengages from the threads. Some H08 configurations may not require this release step.
- Leave the crown in position 1. It must remain fully pushed in while winding.
- Turn the crown clockwise 30 times. These thirty turns are the restart instruction in Hermès mechanical-watch instructions. Use smooth, controlled turns rather than forcing the crown.
- Check that the seconds hand starts moving. Once running, wearing the watch supplies additional winding through wrist motion.
- Keep the crown open only for the next setting step. After adjustment, push it home and re-engage the screw threads if the model has a screw-lock crown.
Thirty turns provide a starting charge, not a promise that every variant will run for exactly the same duration. The standard technical sheet quotes 45 hours, while the current H08 Chronographe listing quotes 46 hours.

The safest sequence is to establish midnight, move the hands outside the date mechanism’s danger window, correct the date, and then set the exact time. Follow the order below whenever the watch has stopped, the date is uncertain or you do not know whether the hands show morning or evening.
1. Release the crown, if necessary
On a screw-lock crown, turn counter-clockwise until it releases. Work only with a dry crown and dry fingers. A crown that will not release should not be forced; misaligned threads can be damaged.
2. Wind in position 1
With the crown fully pushed in, give it 30 clockwise turns if the watch has stopped or has little power. If it is already running, this step supplies additional reserve before you continue.
3. Pull to position 3 and establish midnight
Pull the crown fully out to position 3. The hands stop. Turn the crown counter-clockwise until the date jumps. That jump identifies midnight, not noon. Continue moving the hands to approximately 3 a.m.
This staging step is essential because it takes the mechanism out of the period in which the date is engaged. The Hermès instructions identify the unsafe quick-date interval as 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.; approximately 3 a.m. gives you a practical margin beyond it.
4. Move to position 2 and correct the date
Push the crown in one click to position 2. Turn it clockwise to advance the date to the required number. Perform this quick correction only when the displayed time is safely outside 8 p.m.–2 a.m. If the date is already correct, leave it alone and proceed.

5. Return to position 3 and set the exact time
Pull the crown back to position 3. Turn counter-clockwise to move the hands to the current time. Because you established midnight first, you can now distinguish the correct date change from a noon change. If you are setting an afternoon or evening time, continue past 12 hours rather than stopping at the first passage of 12.
6. Close the crown completely
Push the crown fully home into position 1. On a screw-lock model, press it in and turn clockwise to re-engage the threads. The crown must be fully secured before the watch is exposed to moisture. Hermès describes this as returning the watch to its water-resistant state.

Why the 8 p.m.–2 a.m. warning matters
During the evening and early-morning period, the movement is preparing to change the date automatically. Using the quick-set date mechanism at that time can interfere with the date-changing parts. The practical rule is simple: never use position 2 to correct the date between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.
- If the watch shows an unknown time, pull to position 3 and find the date jump first.
- Advance the hands to about 3 a.m. before selecting position 2.
- Correct the date, then set the hands to the real time.
- If you accidentally quick-set in the restricted period and the date becomes irregular or the crown feels abnormal, stop operating it and have the movement assessed by Hermès or a qualified watchmaker.
Examples that prevent common mistakes
The watch stopped at an unknown time
Wind it in position 1, pull to position 3, and turn counter-clockwise until the date jumps. Move to roughly 3 a.m., correct the date in position 2, then return to position 3 and set the actual time. This avoids guessing whether the hands were showing morning or evening.
The date changes at noon
The hands are 12 hours out of phase. Find the date jump while in position 3, treat that point as midnight, then continue through the remaining 12 hours to reach the correct morning or evening time. Do not use the quick-set function to compensate for a noon/midnight mistake.
The date is one day behind after a short month
The H08 date display advances through the calendar mechanically; it does not know whether a month has 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. After a short month, wait until the hands are around 3 a.m. and use position 2 to advance the date by the required number of days.
The crown is difficult to screw down
Keep the crown dry, press it gently toward the case and turn clockwise only when the threads are aligned. Do not cross-thread or force it. If it does not engage smoothly, leave the watch away from water and seek qualified service.
Using an H08 Chronographe
The H08 Chronographe listing describes a monopusher chronograph with small seconds at 3 o’clock, a date at 4:30, a 46-hour reserve and 10-bar water resistance. Those details apply to that listing, not automatically to every H08.
The chronograph pushers are a separate control system from the crown. Their exact start, stop and reset behavior depends on the reference’s manual. Confirm the instructions for your case before operating a pusher, especially if the watch is wet. The Hermès mechanical-watch instructions explicitly state that the crown and pushbuttons should not be pressed or otherwise handled in contact with water, including splashing.
Rank #3
The three crown positions remain the relevant controls for winding, date correction and time correction, but the presence of a chronograph can change dial indications and the date’s visual position. Do not use the location of the standard model’s date window as a way to identify a chronograph setting position.

Water resistance is a condition of the complete case assembly, including the crown, gaskets and any pushers. A stated rating is not permission to operate controls underwater. The current H08 Chronographe listing states 10 bar, but that protection depends on the crown and seals being correctly closed and in good condition.
- Never press or pull the crown in water or while it is being splashed.
- Never operate chronograph pushers in water.
- After winding or setting, push the crown fully home and screw it down where applicable.
- Do not assume a crown left unscrewed remains water-resistant, even if the model carries a published rating.
- If the watch has been used in water, arrange an annual water-resistance seal check as recommended in the Hermès instructions.
If water reaches the case, stop winding and setting, dry the exterior, and arrange inspection promptly. Continued operation can spread moisture through the movement.
Maintenance, reserve and storage
The H08 is an automatic mechanical watch, so ordinary wrist motion replenishes power after the manual restart. The quoted reserve is a specification for a particular configuration: 45 hours for the standard technical sheet and 46 hours for the current H08 Chronographe listing. Real running time can vary with the watch’s state of wind and service condition.
Regular mechanical-movement maintenance is recommended by Hermès. A service interval should be planned with Hermès or a qualified watchmaker familiar with the H1837 calibre, particularly if amplitude, rate, winding feel or power reserve has changed noticeably.
A watch winder is not required by the operating instructions. If you store the H08, keep it dry and protect the crown from accidental knocks. When you wear it again after it has stopped, use the 30-turn restart procedure rather than shaking it aggressively.
Troubleshooting after adjustment
The seconds hand does not start after winding
Confirm that the crown was in position 1 and that all 30 turns were clockwise. If the crown was left in position 3, the hands are intentionally stopped. Push the crown home and check again. A watch that remains stopped after correct winding needs professional diagnosis.
The date does not advance with position 2
Check that the crown is one click out, not fully pulled to position 3, and that you are turning clockwise. If the displayed time is within 8 p.m.–2 a.m., stop and first stage the hands to approximately 3 a.m. in position 3.
The watch loses water resistance after setting
Inspect whether the crown was fully pushed in and, if applicable, screwed down. Do not test the watch in water if the threads do not engage or if the crown feels loose. Have the seals checked before further water exposure.

Do not assume the standard H08 procedure covers the chronograph pushers. Identify the exact reference and follow its manual; if the pusher is stiff, fails to reset or was operated near water, stop using it and arrange an inspection.
