How to Get a Smartwatch or Fitness Tracker for Free

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, but only in specific circumstances. In the U.S., you may receive a smartwatch or fitness tracker from an employer wellness program, get reimbursed through a health plan, or have a carrier offset the device payments with promotional credits. There is no universal public program that gives everyone a free Apple Watch, Fitbit, or Garmin.

The best order is to check your employer benefits portal, then your health-insurance rewards portal, and only then compare wireless-carrier promotions. A carrier may make the watch payment $0 while still requiring a cellular line, taxes, fees, and a long service commitment.

What “free” actually means

Before applying for an offer, identify which kind of free it promises. The difference determines whether you pay upfront, take on a subscription, or risk a bill if you cancel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Offer type What you pay Main risk
Employer-provided device Potentially $0 Limited eligibility, approved models, or employment requirements
Reimbursement You pay upfront and receive money later Deadlines, receipts, and compatibility rules
Gift card or points reward You complete activities before earning value Time commitment, expiration, restrictions, or taxes
Carrier bill credits Usually no net device payment after credits Required service, taxes, fees, and a balance if you cancel
Discount You pay part of the price Marketing may emphasize savings rather than your final cost
Giveaway Usually nothing, if legitimate Low odds, scams, and aggressive data collection
Research-study device May be free or loaned Screening, location limits, data collection, and return obligations

A device is genuinely free only when the device cost is covered without a required purchase, or when the program supplies it directly. “$0 monthly device payment” can still mean you pay for a watch line for 24 or 36 months.

1. Check your employer wellness program first

Employer wellness benefits are often the strongest route because they may provide a basic tracker or purchase credit without requiring a separate cellular line.

  1. Open your employer’s benefits portal.
  2. Search for “wellness,” “activity tracker,” “fitness device,” “wearable reimbursement,” “wellness incentive,” and “health rewards.”
  3. Read the annual benefits guide and the plan-specific incentive document.
  4. Save the eligibility and reimbursement terms before purchasing anything.

Ask HR or the benefits administrator:

  • Is the device supplied, reimbursed, discounted, or bought with points?
  • Which brands and exact models qualify?
  • Must you be enrolled in the company health plan?
  • Are spouses or dependents eligible?
  • Is the reward taxable?
  • What is the enrollment or purchase deadline?
  • Do you keep the device if you leave the company?
  • Is a phone app an acceptable substitute?
  • Who handles a lost or defective device?

Examples of how employer programs differ

Montgomery County, Maryland’s employee wellness program advertises a free activity tracker, or the option to use a compatible personal tracker, for eligible county and participating-agency employees enrolled in qualifying insurance. It also advertises annual rewards of up to $350. That is an example of a specific employer program, not a benefit available to U.S. workers generally. See the Montgomery County program terms.

Cleveland Clinic’s Employee Health Plan takes a different approach: eligible participants can receive a one-time $115 portal credit toward an activity device. The portal supports Fitbit, most Garmin devices, and Apple Watch, but the program requires continued syncing and says participants should log in at least weekly. Manually entered steps or activity minutes are not accepted. Check Cleveland Clinic’s activity-device requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These examples show why “my employer offers a free smartwatch” is too broad. One plan may issue a tracker, another may reimburse part of a purchase, and another may pay gift-card rewards after activities.

2. Check your health insurer and exact plan

Insurer wellness benefits are highly plan-specific. The public website for an insurance company may describe programs that do not apply to your employer group, state, membership tier, or current plan year.

  1. Sign in to the insurer’s member portal.
  2. Search for “wellness,” “rewards,” “fitness device,” “activity tracker,” and “wearable.”
  3. Check any employer supplemental-benefits website linked from your plan documents.
  4. Call member services using the number printed on your insurance card.
  5. Ask for the current written terms, eligibility rules, and deadline.

Ask whether your specific plan offers:

  • A supplied device.
  • A device allowance or reimbursement.
  • Points redeemable for a wearable.
  • A discount marketplace.
  • Gift cards that can offset a purchase.
  • A premium, deductible, or other incentive.

Also ask whether your phone’s built-in step counter or a supported health app can satisfy the activity requirement. If it can, buying a watch may be unnecessary.

Indiana’s 2026 state employee program illustrates the distinction. Employees and spouses enrolled in a State Personnel Department-sponsored medical plan can earn rewards for more than 20 wellness activities. The 2026 FAQ says an eligible participant can earn $10 per team step challenge by recording at least 7,000 steps every day of the challenge, up to $40, with rewards earned and redeemed by December 31, 2026. Supported connections include Garmin, Fitbit, Google Fit, and Apple Health; Apple Health requires the Mobile Health Consumer app for data to populate the account. The published program is a rewards program, not evidence of a universal free-device benefit. Read Indiana’s 2026 FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Understand the privacy and wellness-program rules

A wellness reward is not unconditional free money. Requirements can include daily steps, active minutes, a health assessment, biometric screening, coaching, or regular data synchronization. Some programs accept only particular devices or integrations.

Before linking Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin, Google Fit, Samsung Health, or another account, read the program’s privacy notice. Check:

Do not falsify activity data or use step-spoofing tools. That can violate program rules and lead to disqualification or loss of rewards.

The U.S. Department of Labor describes activity-only and outcome-based wellness programs. Its guidance discusses limits that generally apply to health-contingent wellness rewards—typically 30% of the cost of employee-only coverage, or 50% for tobacco-related programs—and reasonable-alternative-standard requirements. This is a regulatory framework, not a guarantee that your plan offers a device or a particular alternative. See the Department of Labor’s wellness-program guidance and its reasonable-alternative-standard guidance.

4. Treat carrier offers as service contracts, not gifts

Wireless carriers commonly advertise a “free” watch by financing it and then applying monthly promotional credits. The usual process is:

  1. Choose an eligible watch.
  2. Open a qualifying new wearable line or add the watch to an eligible account.
  3. Finance the device over a fixed term.
  4. Receive promotional credits on future bills.
  5. Keep the required account, phone plan, and watch line active until all credits post.

Before accepting, confirm the phone-plan requirement, new-line requirement, installment term, trade-in requirement, taxes on the full retail price, activation or connection charges, monthly watch-service price, cancellation rules, and early-payoff rules. Also check whether the offer is for new customers, existing customers, or both.

Examples checked in 2026

Verizon Gizmo Watch 4: Verizon announced a promotion running July 9 through September 3, 2026, with up to $180 in promotional credits over 36 months. It required a new watch line priced at $10 per month plus taxes and fees. Because the promotion period ended on September 3, 2026, treat it as an example of the offer structure rather than a current open enrollment deal. It is also a child-focused watch, not a general Apple Watch or Garmin substitute. See Verizon’s announcement.

T-Mobile Apple Watch promotion: The promotion identified as ID260193, code R569, showed a March 5, 2026 start date and up to $299.99 in credits over 24 months, described as up to $12.50 per month. It required an eligible Apple Watch, monthly device payments, a qualifying new wearable line, and a Watch Plan Plus plan. Tax on the pre-credit price was due at sale. Credits could stop if the line was canceled or the device was paid off early. Verify the offer in your account before ordering because carrier terms change. Read T-Mobile’s promotional terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AT&T: Its wearable listings showed Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch SE 3 offers with reduced monthly device prices, a new line, and a 36-month installment agreement. The pages state that tax on the full price is due at sale and warn that canceling service may make the remaining device balance due. A wearable line may cost as little as $10.99 per month depending on the plan and features. Check AT&T’s wearable listings and the offer support terms.

The accurate description is therefore “free after bill credits with required service,” not simply “free smartwatch.”

5. Earn points, gift cards, or rewards

Some programs let you accumulate value through employer challenges, insurer activities, credit-card or loyalty points, fitness-app promotions, retailer rewards, or referrals. You may then exchange that value for a tracker or use a general gift card toward one.

Check every program for:

  • Expiration dates.
  • Minimum redemption amounts.
  • Approved brands and models.
  • Whether points are worth less than cash.
  • Return and warranty rules.
  • Terms that allow the program to change.
  • Tax treatment of gift cards or rewards.

Do not assume a particular credit card or fitness app currently offers a wearable. Unless the live terms in your account say so, treat general online claims as unverified.

Some wellness platforms also administer discounted-device rewards. For example, Wellable’s Invite Fitness documentation describes applying rewards toward discounted devices such as Fitbit, Garmin, or Apple Watch. That is an employer- or program-administration option, not a universal consumer deal. See Wellable’s program documentation.

6. Consider giveaways, studies, and local programs

Giveaways and research studies can provide a device, but they are secondary possibilities rather than a dependable strategy for obtaining a premium wearable.

For a giveaway, confirm the organizer’s identity, read the official rules, and check whether no purchase is necessary. Never pay an unverified “shipping,” “tax,” or “processing” fee to claim a prize. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, bank credentials, or a Social Security number to an unverified organizer.

For a research study, ask whether the device is yours permanently or merely loaned. Confirm the location restriction, screening criteria, time commitment, data collected, compensation, and return obligation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local employers, schools, libraries, public-health departments, and community wellness programs may also offer loaner devices or challenges. Verify the organization through its official website rather than a social-media message.

7. Calculate whether a carrier offer is really cheaper

Use this formula before signing up:

Total cost = upfront tax and fees
+ monthly watch service × required months
+ activation or connection charges
+ accessories
+ remaining balance if credits are lost
− confirmed credits or reimbursement

For example, a $10 monthly watch line for 24 months costs $240 before taxes and fees. A $299.99 watch whose device payments are covered by credits is not economically free if you would never otherwise buy the cellular line.

Conversely, a $115 employer credit may be the better deal for someone who only needs step tracking. Compare the benefit with buying a non-cellular tracker—or using a phone—rather than comparing only the advertised device price.

Also allow for delayed credits. You may need enough available credit to cover the initial tax, device charge, or one or more bills before promotional credits appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Match the device to the actual need

A free or subsidized premium watch is not automatically the best choice.

  • Apple Watch: Best for iPhone users who want notifications, apps, health features, or cellular capability. It is a poor fit for Android users or someone who needs only step counting. See Apple Watch models.
  • Fitbit: Suited to straightforward activity, sleep, and health tracking with broad phone support. Check whether desired features require Fitbit Premium and whether your wellness program accepts the exact model. See Fitbit’s current range.
  • Garmin: Better for runners, cyclists, hikers, GPS, training metrics, and long battery life. It may be excessive for basic step tracking. See Garmin’s current range.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch: A natural option for many Android and Samsung-phone users, but generally unsuitable for iPhone users seeking a simple tracker. See Samsung’s watch range.
  • Verizon Gizmo Watch 4: Designed for children who need location and communication features, not as a conventional adult fitness tracker.

Check iPhone-versus-Android compatibility, cellular-phone compatibility, portal support for the exact model, and whether the program accepts Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung Health, or only specific integrations.

A device that syncs with your phone may still fail a wellness program’s requirements. Cleveland Clinic, for example, does not accept manually added steps or activity minutes. Review its compatibility rules.

When a free phone app is enough

If your goal is simply to meet a step or activity threshold, your phone may do the job. Consider:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your phone’s built-in step counter.
  • A free health or fitness app accepted by the program.
  • An employer loaner device.
  • A basic non-cellular activity band.
  • A used or refurbished tracker from a reputable seller.
  • A general gift card rather than a restricted device reward.

Choose a cellular smartwatch only if you genuinely need independent calling, messaging, GPS, notifications, or other watch features. A non-cellular model avoids the recurring line charge.

Common failure points

  • Canceling early: promotional credits usually stop, and the remaining installment balance may become due.
  • Paying off early: some carriers stop credits when the device is paid off. Confirm before doing it.
  • Missing a sync: a challenge may require daily data. Log in as required.
  • Buying an unsupported model: app compatibility does not guarantee program eligibility.
  • Leaving an employer: access to the portal, future rewards, or reimbursement may end.
  • Ignoring taxes: employer rewards or gift cards may be taxable. Indiana’s published FAQ, for example, says its gift-card value is included in gross wages. Check your plan’s tax notice or consult a tax professional.
  • Confusing software with hardware: a free trial of Fitbit Premium, Oura, Whoop, or another app is not a free device and may auto-renew.

Scam checklist

Walk away from any “free Apple Watch” claim that:

  • Requires a credit-card fee before revealing the terms.
  • Claims you won without official rules.
  • Requests a password or one-time verification code.
  • Asks you to pay shipping with cryptocurrency, gift cards, or a peer-to-peer transfer.
  • Uses a misspelled carrier domain.
  • Pressures you to install an unknown app.
  • Promises a device in exchange for excessive personal information.

Final checklist

  1. Verify eligibility in your own employer or insurance portal.
  2. Save the current terms and deadline.
  3. Confirm the exact approved model and data connection.
  4. Determine whether the device is yours, reimbursed, or loaned.
  5. Calculate service, taxes, fees, and cancellation exposure.
  6. Read the privacy notice before linking health data.
  7. Check tax treatment for rewards or gift cards.
  8. Do not pay suspicious claim fees.
