How to Minimise Scratches and Wear on a Watch

Reduce avoidable wear by limiting impacts and abrasive contact, storing watches separately, and following the maker’s care instructions for each material.

The most reliable way to minimise wear is to reduce contact, impacts and abrasive deposits—and to care for each surface according to its material and the watchmaker’s instructions. No crystal or finish is scratch-proof, and cleaning or polishing advice for one watch may damage another.

How to prevent everyday scratches and wear

Most avoidable marks come from contact with hard or abrasive objects, knocks, or grit rubbing against a surface. A few habits can reduce those risks, though they cannot guarantee a mark-free watch.

  • Take the watch off for manual work and intense activity. Raymond Weil advises avoiding strong impacts and abrasions, and removing the watch before manual work or intense physical activity. This is a practical precaution, not a guarantee against damage. Raymond Weil’s care recommendations.
  • Keep other jewelry off the watch wrist. Patek Philippe advises: “To preserve the bracelet and the case, avoid wearing jewelry on the same wrist as the watch that could cause additional wear to the bracelet.” CHANEL likewise advises against wearing bracelets on the same wrist as its watches. Patek Philippe and CHANEL.
  • Store watches separately. Keep a watch apart from jewelry and other watches, and avoid setting it down crystal-side first. Harry Winston recommends the original box or a dedicated travel case for storage and travel. Harry Winston’s product-care guidance.

What a crystal can—and cannot—protect against

Crystal material affects scratch resistance, but it is only one part of durability. Timex identifies scratch resistance, shatter resistance, flexibility, light transparency and cost as factors that differ among crystal types. A harder crystal may resist scratches better without being immune to damage, and the case, coatings, bracelet finish and strap remain separate surfaces with their own vulnerabilities. Timex’s crystal-material overview.

Rado says sapphire is considerably more scratch-resistant than mineral or acrylic glass, but also notes that sapphire can be scratched by materials as hard as or harder than itself. Its FAQ lists these hardness ratings: natural diamond, 10,000 Vickers; high-tech ceramic, approximately 1,250 Vickers; Ceramos, approximately 1,750 Vickers; and sapphire crystal, 2,500 Vickers. Rado does not state a publication year for those figures. They are manufacturer-provided hardness ratings, not independent tests or a direct prediction of how a particular watch will fare in daily wear. Rado’s FAQ.

When a mark may be a deposit, not a scratch

Appearance alone may not identify damage. CHANEL says contact with softer materials such as 18K gold or titanium can leave deposits on its ceramic that look like scratches, even though the ceramic is designed to be scratch-resistant. That guidance applies to CHANEL ceramic; it is not a diagnosis for other materials or brands. CHANEL’s watch-care instructions.

How to clean a watch without damaging it

Start with the manual for the specific model. Water and a brush may be suitable for a water-resistant watch with a metal bracelet, but that does not make the same method safe for a leather, fabric or satin strap—or for a watch with uncertain water resistance. Check instructions for the crown and pushers before using water.

PolyWatch Plastic Watch Crystal Scratch Remover Polish Tool SS013059000-2 Pack
  • Professional results, also for deeper scratches
  • Easy and quick application
  • For compatible watches and metal surfaces: Rolex suggests occasional cleaning with a microfiber cloth and describes using soapy water and a soft brush on the case and bracelet. Audemars Piguet recommends warm water, a fresh-water rinse and a soft cloth for a watch and metal bracelet. Follow the individual watch’s water-resistance and crown instructions first. Rolex and Audemars Piguet.
  • For leather, satin or fabric straps: CHANEL says not to use water on these strap materials. Use the care instructions for the specific strap rather than applying metal-bracelet cleaning advice. CHANEL.
  • For chemicals: Swatch warns against direct contact with solvents, detergents, mosquito repellent, perfumes, sun creams and other chemicals that may damage watch parts. Swatch’s product-care guidance.
  • After salt or pool water: If the maker advises it for the watch, rinse a metal bracelet with fresh water after exposure to salt water or chlorinated pool water. Patek Philippe recommends this for its metal bracelets; Audemars Piguet also recommends a fresh-water rinse after swimming in salt water. This is cleaning and contamination care, not a way to remove scratches. Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

What to do about an existing scratch

Do not assume a polishing method is safe just because it worked on another watch. First identify which surface is marked—the crystal, case, coating, bracelet or strap—and what it is made of. If the mark could be a deposit rather than a scratch, avoid abrasive cleaning while you investigate. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized watchmaker before attempting a repair, particularly if the material or coating is unclear.

Brand guidance is specific. Rolex says: “Professional polishing of your watch case and bracelet should only be done by an Official Rolex Service Center.” Audemars Piguet says polishing can be requested when complete maintenance is needed, should be limited to a small number of times, and cannot fully prevent natural patina. Its care guidance puts it this way: “However, polishing will not fully prevent the watch’s natural patina that comes with time.” Swatch says light scratches on its synthetic glass can be polished; that instruction does not establish a safe method for sapphire, mineral crystal, coatings or other makers’ watches. Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Swatch.

  2. When wearing jewelry: Put bracelets on the other wrist to avoid rubbing against the watch.
  3. After wearing: Wipe the watch with a microfiber cloth if its maker recommends it. Use water or a soft brush only when the model’s instructions allow it.
  4. When storing or traveling: Keep the watch in its box or a separate compartment, away from other watches and jewelry; do not place it crystal-side down.
  5. If you find a mark: Identify the affected material and consult the maker or an authorized watchmaker before trying to polish it.
