There is no universal setting sequence for an automatic GMT watch. Find the exact watch or movement in its official manual before operating the crown: crown positions, turning directions, and the way the date and hour hands move differ by model. On many GMT watches, a 24-hour hand and matching scale show the second time zone, but the controls that set that display are movement-specific.
Before you turn the crown
- Identify the watch and movement. Use the model name, caliber number, or manual supplied with the watch. Follow that manual’s complete setting sequence and diagrams; do not assume another brand’s instructions apply.
- Check the crown type. If your model has a screw-down crown, follow its instructions for unscrewing it before pulling it out and securing it again after setting. Certina specifies this for covered Powermatic 80.661 GMT watches, but it is not a universal crown procedure.
- Confirm what the hands display. GMT layouts differ. For example, Citizen Caliber 9054 uses the 24-hour hand for one region and the hour, minute, second, and date displays for another; Union Glashütte’s U 2893-2 GMT uses its 24-hour hand to indicate the second zone.
Use the examples below to understand why the manual matters, not as instructions for an unidentified watch.

How setting systems differ
| Watch or movement | Second-zone setting | Date and local-hour behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certina Powermatic 80.661 GMT | At crown position III, the GMT display and minute hand are set together by turning the crown forwards or backwards. | The local hour hand and date are handled separately; the date changes when the local hour hand passes midnight. | For covered watches with a screw-in crown, Certina says to unscrew it before pulling it out and screw it back after setting. See the Certina GMT Powermatic 80 manual. |
| Citizen Caliber 9054 | The manual uses the fully pulled crown to establish reference time, then the first crown step to set the other region. | The hour hand and date move together in one-hour increments while setting that region. | Citizen warns not to turn the crown backwards while switching the date display, as this can make the watch show the wrong date. Follow the full Caliber 9054 instructions and illustrations. |
| Union Glashütte U 2893-2 GMT | At position II, turn forwards to set the second-zone time. | At position II, turn backwards for rapid date correction. | The manual says the watch continues functioning during second-zone adjustment. See the U 2893-2 GMT manual. |
| STOWA Verus GMT | In the middle crown position, turn counterclockwise to adjust the second time zone. | In that same position, turn clockwise to adjust the date. | See STOWA’s instructions for use and locate the Verus GMT section. |
| Zodiac GMT instructions | The cited instructions set the 24-hour GMT hand at position II. | The date is also set at position II. | Zodiac says to advance the date only after 2 a.m. and before 10 p.m.; this is Zodiac-specific guidance, not a general rule for every mechanical watch. See the Zodiac watch instructions. |
Why the date and second time zone may not set independently
Some movements let you adjust a GMT hand separately; others couple adjustments to the minute or local-hour hand. A date can also advance with the local hour hand, or be corrected using a different crown position and direction. For the Certina Powermatic 80.661 GMT, the GMT display and minute hand move together at position III, while local-hour and date adjustment follows a separate procedure. On the Citizen 9054, the hour hand and date move synchronously in one-hour increments when setting a region.
These differences are practical, not cosmetic: using the wrong crown step or turning direction can change a different display than intended. Citizen’s manual specifically cautions against turning the crown backwards while switching the date display because the watch may then show the wrong date.

A safe way to proceed with your own watch
- Find the official manual for the exact model or caliber. Check the movement reference if the watch model name alone does not identify its setting system.
- Read the manual’s instructions for the crown positions, hand functions, date correction, and any stated date-setting restriction before pulling the crown.
- If the watch has a screw-down crown, unscrew it only as directed by the manufacturer. Pull the crown to the specified position rather than assuming the first, middle, or fully pulled position has a standard function.
- Set the second-zone display using the manual’s specified hand, crown position, and turning direction. If the instructions couple that hand to the minute hand or another display, account for that before continuing.
- Set the local time and date using the watch’s separate instructions. Observe any movement-specific warning about date correction or crown direction.
- Return the crown to its normal position and secure a screw-down crown according to the manual. If the hands or date do not behave as the manual describes, stop rather than trying another movement’s procedure.
Do not apply one watch’s date rule to another
Date-window cautions are not identical across GMT movements. Zodiac’s cited instructions specify advancing the date after 2 a.m. and before 10 p.m. That interval belongs to those Zodiac instructions; it should not be generalized to every automatic GMT. Use the restriction, if any, stated in your own watch’s manual.
Likewise, crown position III is not inherently the GMT-setting position. Certina’s cited movement uses position III to adjust its GMT display and minute hand together, while Union Glashütte and Zodiac describe second-zone adjustment at position II. STOWA’s Verus GMT uses the middle position for both date and second-zone adjustment, with opposite turning directions.
