Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual guide calls for a minimum of 25 turns for partial winding after the watch has stopped or at first setup. To set the time, pull the crown to position 2, turn it to move the hour and minute hands, then push and screw the crown securely back against the case.
How do I wind a Rolex Oyster Perpetual?
- Start with the watch dry and out of the water. Unscrew the crown from its fully closed position (position 0) until it is free at position 1. Rolex’s illustrated guide describes the motion as “unscrew and then pull out.”
- Wind in position 1. Turn the crown clockwise. Turning it the other way has no effect. When setting the watch for the first time or after it has stopped, the Oyster Perpetual guide specifies a minimum of 25 turns for partial winding.
- Set the time in position 2. Pull the crown out to the next notch. The seconds hand stops, so you can set the time precisely. Turn the crown in either direction to move the hour and minute hands.
- Close the crown. Push it back to position 1. Press lightly toward the case while screwing it clockwise until it is fully secured.
Rolex’s general care FAQ separately advises turning the crown clockwise about 20 times to get a stopped watch going. That is general Rolex guidance; for the Oyster Perpetual, follow the model-specific guide’s minimum of 25 turns for partial winding. See Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual user guide and its care FAQ.

How do I set the time on a Rolex Oyster Perpetual?
Pull the crown to position 2, where the seconds hand stops, then turn the crown in either direction until the hour and minute hands show the correct time. The guide for this Oyster Perpetual has no date-setting step. If your watch has additional functions or you are unsure of its reference, use the guide for that exact model; Rolex notes that functions can vary.

After winding or setting the time, return the crown to position 1, press it gently toward the case, and screw it clockwise until fully closed. The screw-down crown contributes to the watch’s water resistance. Never unscrew it underwater. Rolex states that the Oyster Perpetual is waterproof to at least 100 metres, but that rating does not make it safe to operate with the crown unscrewed. See Rolex’s care FAQ.

Does a daily-worn Oyster Perpetual need manual winding?
Rolex says a self-winding watch worn daily does not need manual winding. Its FAQ gives a reserve of up to 70 hours depending on the model. Current official specifications list approximately 70 hours for the Oyster Perpetual 36, reference 126000, and Oyster Perpetual 41, reference 134300; other references or movement generations may differ. See the Oyster Perpetual 36 specifications and the Oyster Perpetual 41 specifications.

Do not force a crown that will not unscrew, pull out, or screw down normally. Check the guide for your exact reference or contact an official Rolex retailer for assistance. Rolex says its official retailers have the specialist skills and equipment for watch maintenance; the available guidance does not establish a diagnosis for a resistant crown.
