Omega Aqua Terra vs. Grand Seiko SBGH279: Which Fits You Better?

The choice comes down to priorities: the Grand Seiko SBGH279 is a 40 mm high-beat watch with a compact 46.2 mm case length, while the 41 mm Omega Aqua Terra offers stronger stated water- and magnetic-resistance figures in the cited family specifications. The exact Omega reference in the 2022 matchup is 220.10.41.21.03.004; specifications can vary across Aqua Terra references and generations.

Which watches are being compared?

The Grand Seiko is the Heritage SBGH279, a stainless-steel 40 mm model with a grey dial and Hi-Beat Calibre 9S85. The Omega in Fratello’s August 2022 comparison is the blue-dial Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M, reference 220.10.41.21.03.004. That article reports 41 mm diameter and 13.2 mm thickness for the Omega, compared with 40 mm and 13.3 mm for the Grand Seiko. These are the dimensions in that dated matchup, not a guarantee for every Aqua Terra generation. Fratello’s exact-reference comparison also records euro retail prices from 2022, which should be treated as historical rather than current.

How do their movements and specifications compare?

Specification Grand Seiko SBGH279 Omega Aqua Terra 41 mm
Movement Automatic Hi-Beat Calibre 9S85 Calibre 8900 on the cited 41 mm variant
Frequency / certification 36,000 beats per hour METAS Master Chronometer certification on the cited variant; frequency not stated in the cited product sheet
Power reserve 55 hours 60 hours on the cited variant
Published accuracy / magnetic resistance Static accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day, as stated by Grand Seiko Resistance to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss on the cited variant; a directly comparable daily-accuracy figure is not stated in the cited product sheet
Water resistance 100 m 150 m on the cited variant

The Omega figures in the table come from the official Hong Kong product sheet for green-dial reference 220.10.41.21.10.001, not the blue-dial reference in the 2022 matchup. Use them as a close family reference, not as confirmed specifications for 220.10.41.21.03.004. The Omega’s 41 mm family specifications are also stated in the brand’s June 21, 2024 black-dial Aqua Terra release. The Grand Seiko specifications are listed by the official US boutique.

High-beat versus Master Chronometer

Grand Seiko’s 9S85 beats at 36,000 times per hour, the defining technical distinction of this model. Omega’s cited Calibre 8900 variant is certified as a METAS Master Chronometer and is specified to resist magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. Those are different strengths: the high-beat figure describes movement frequency, while the Omega certification and magnetic-resistance specification address performance standards and exposure conditions.

#1 Best Overall
Omega
  • Self Winding Automatic Chronometer Movement
  • Chronometer, Anti-magnetic, Transparent case back, Screw down crown and Date feature
  • Blue Dial with Polished and Brushed Stainless Steel Case
  • Case Diameter: 41mm
  • Domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment

Do not compare the published accuracy numbers as if they were measured by one shared test. Grand Seiko states a static movement accuracy specification of +5 to -3 seconds per day. METAS certification follows its own testing criteria; the linked product sheet does not provide an equivalent daily-rate figure for this particular comparison.

Which one is better for water and magnetic exposure?

On the cited specifications, the Aqua Terra 41 mm variant has the advantage: 150 m water resistance and resistance to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss, versus 100 m water resistance for the SBGH279. The Omega’s figures are for reference 220.10.41.21.10.001, so confirm the rating for the exact reference you are considering.

These ratings do not make either watch suitable for every water activity. Consider the activity, the condition of the watch, and the manufacturer’s guidance rather than treating a depth rating as a blanket promise for any use.

How do they wear on the wrist?

The SBGH279 measures 40 mm across, 46.2 mm in case length, 13.3 mm thick, and 19 mm between the lugs, according to Grand Seiko’s US listing. Fratello gives the compared Aqua Terra as 41 mm across and 13.2 mm thick. Omega’s official sheet for the adjacent 41 mm green-dial variant lists a 47.90 mm lug-to-lug measurement. These are useful reference points, but the lug-to-lug figure for that variant is not confirmation of the blue comparison model’s dimensions.

The difference in nominal diameter is only 1 mm, and diameter alone does not determine comfort. Case length, bracelet articulation, wrist shape, and how much watch you like to see all matter. If fit is decisive, try the exact references on wrist rather than choosing from diameter alone.

What distinguishes their design and finishing?

Grand Seiko SBGH279

The SBGH279 pairs a grey dial with the modern 44GS case design. Grand Seiko highlights its faceted hands and indices, details that emphasize sharp reflections and a precise, architectural look. The brand describes the model as “The iconic 44GS case meets a Hi-Beat automatics movement.”

Omega Aqua Terra

The exact matchup model is a blue-dial Aqua Terra on a steel bracelet. The Aqua Terra line’s broader range includes multiple dial colors, sizes, and generations, so a different reference may look or wear differently. Fratello’s two writers reached different judgments about the watches’ visual character, a reminder that neither dial treatment nor finishing yields an objective winner.

What do they cost, and are they available?

Fratello listed euro retail prices of €6,200 for the Grand Seiko and €6,100 for the Omega in its August 2022 comparison. Those are historical prices, not current offers. A current local price or availability figure for the exact Omega reference is not established here; check the reference number and market with an authorized seller. Omega’s June 2024 release states a five-year warranty for the black-dial Aqua Terra range, but warranty terms may vary by market or model, so verify coverage for the watch and seller you choose.

Which watch should you choose?

  • Choose the SBGH279 if you want a high-beat movement, a 40 mm case with a 46.2 mm case length, and the grey-dial 44GS design.
  • Lean toward the Aqua Terra if magnetic resistance and the higher water-resistance rating are priorities, while confirming those specifications against the exact reference you plan to buy.
  • Try both if you are undecided about wrist presence or finishing; the small diameter difference does not settle fit, and visual preference is personal.
  • Compare exact references and local offers before buying. The Omega in the 2022 matchup and the green-dial variant used for official specification details are different references.
