The Pita Barcelona Molinos Orbital tells time with three moving planetary gears instead of conventional hands. A marker on the small central gear indicates the hour; a marker on the larger gear indicates the minutes. There is no crown: the time-setting mechanism is integrated into the caseback. This hands-on overview is based on published launch coverage and a designer interview, not a firsthand test.
How do you read the Molinos Orbital?
Read the marker on the small central gear against the hour markers around the dial to find the hour. The larger geared wheel indicates the minutes. Although the display uses three gears, the two indicators do not move at the same rate: the minute indicator completes a cycle each hour, while the hour indicator completes one twice a day. Hodinkee’s launch coverage describes the arrangement as a planetary-gear display, and WatchPaper likewise identifies the small central gear as the hour indicator and the larger gear as the minute indicator.
The result is a display that makes the motion of the mechanism part of the watch’s visual appeal. It is less immediately familiar than conventional hands, so reading it may take some practice; the sources describe how the indicators work but do not report a controlled legibility test.
How is the time set without a crown?
The case has no conventional crown. Instead, Pita Barcelona’s Time Setting Mechanism is built into the caseback, as described by Hodinkee and Europa Star. Those reports establish its location and general principle, but do not provide a verified operating procedure. For exact instructions on setting a particular watch, consult its documentation or the manufacturer rather than relying on a guessed sequence.

What inspired the gear display?
Daniel Jiménez, identified in Revolution Watch’s interview as Pita Barcelona’s CEO, connected the design to the large gears in old clocks that he and his father serviced. He said: “The Molinos Orbital is an homage to the old clocks with big gears, that my father and I got mesmerized by while servicing them.”
Jiménez also explained that the aim was to use only three gears and pinions, rather than expose a more visually cluttered conventional skeleton-watch arrangement. The moving display is therefore not just decoration: it is the central way the watch communicates the time.

What did it cost, and is it still available?
Hodinkee reported a launch price of €7,750 and a limited edition of 71 pieces in July 2018. WatchPaper reported the same price and edition size that month. These are launch-era facts, not a current asking price or evidence that any examples remain available. The cited coverage does not establish whether the edition sold out, whether Pita Barcelona still offers the model, or what current secondary-market prices are.
Europa Star gave a broad historical price range of “From 5,000 to 10,000$,” rather than a model-specific current price. It should not be treated as a present-day quote.
