For everyday wear, quartz is usually the practical choice if you want straightforward timekeeping with little day-to-day attention. An automatic may suit you better if you enjoy a spring-powered mechanical watch and accept winding considerations, movement-specific timekeeping variation, and periodic service. Neither type is universally better: compare the specifications and care guidance for the exact models you are considering.
How quartz and automatic watches work
Quartz: electrically powered timekeeping
A quartz watch uses an electrically energized quartz crystal oscillator to keep time. Many models use a replaceable battery, but power sources vary, so check the exact watch’s documentation. A replaceable-cell model will eventually need a battery change.

Automatic: a spring-powered mechanical movement
An automatic watch is mechanical: its mainspring stores energy, and the movement’s winding state can affect how it runs. Wearing conditions and the environment also matter. Seiko identifies temperature, gravity, shock, wear, and mainspring state as factors that can affect mechanical-watch accuracy (Seiko’s accuracy guidance).
Which keeps better time?
There is no reliable category-wide number that describes the accuracy of every quartz watch or every automatic. Check each model’s published timekeeping specification and what conditions it covers. A figure advertised for one quartz model should not be treated as typical of all quartz watches; likewise, one automatic movement’s stated or observed rate does not describe all automatics.

Mechanical-watch rate can vary with use and environment. Citizen also notes that a mechanical watch’s accuracy varies as it takes different positions while being worn (Citizen’s mechanical-watch explanation). These are reasons to evaluate a specific movement and its stated specification rather than assume every watch in a category performs alike.
What everyday ownership involves
Quartz: battery and model-specific service
If the quartz model uses a replaceable cell, battery replacement is a foreseeable maintenance task. Tissot’s US service information lists battery replacement and water-resistance work among quartz service items (Tissot US service information). The required battery and appropriate service depend on the watch.

Automatic: winding and periodic service
Consider how often you will wear the watch and whether it will keep running between wears. Seiko advises daily winding for its mechanical watches and recommends service about every three years for Seiko watches. Its customer-service guidance says: “Frequency of such work depends on the climate and the owner’s individual care of the watch, but in general, we recommend having your watch serviced about every three years at an Authorized Seiko Service Center.” That is Seiko’s recommendation, not a universal interval for every manufacturer or model (Seiko service guidance).
Service is relevant to both types. Tissot describes quartz battery replacement and water-resistance work, as well as mechanical movement adjustment and full movement service. Seiko’s service information describes inspection, cleaning, and oiling. Consult the maker’s current guidance for the watch you own or plan to buy.

Service costs, water resistance, and long-term care
Ownership cost cannot be reduced to movement type alone. Service prices and recommendations vary by model and market. Tissot’s US service page says prices apply through official customer service centers in the relevant country and are recommended prices for agreed third-party centers; shipping may cost extra. Check the page for current US prices and confirm the applicable service for your model rather than applying those figures to another country.
Water resistance is a condition of the individual watch, not a permanent guarantee. Seals can age and parts can be damaged, so do not assume the original rating remains valid indefinitely. Seiko includes water-resistance checks in its service guidance. Follow the maker’s instructions about use and inspection, especially if the watch has been opened, damaged, or exposed to conditions outside its stated rating.

| Daily attention | You are comfortable arranging a battery replacement if the model uses a replaceable cell. | You are willing to consider winding and whether the watch stays running between wears. |
| Maintenance | You will follow the maker’s battery, service, and water-resistance guidance. | You will follow the maker’s mechanical-service guidance; intervals differ by brand and model. |
| Fit and intended use | Choose based on the specific watch’s comfort, case, bracelet, water-resistance rating, and intended use. | Use the same model-specific checks; movement type alone does not establish durability or fit. |
Before deciding, compare the exact models’ published timekeeping specifications, power source, service arrangements, comfort, price, and intended use. For bracelet changes or adjustments, confirm the watch’s attachment type and dimensions; compatibility is not universal.
