Design and build
The Galaxy S21 FE measures 155.7 × 74.5 × 7.9 mm and weighs 177g, making it relatively light for a phone with a 6.4-inch display. Samsung listed the US model in Lavender, White, Olive Green, Navy, and Graphite, although actual availability can vary by retailer, carrier, and remaining inventory.
#1 Best Overall
- The Galaxy S21 FE sports a sleek polycarbonate back with a premium matte finish that resists fingerprints and feels smooth in hand, giving it a stylish yet practical design.
It has a flat front display with a centered hole-punch opening for the selfie camera. The rear camera housing follows the color-matched design language of the S21 family. The phone uses a USB-C port, with volume and power controls on the side. Samsung documents the optical in-display fingerprint reader and face-recognition functions.
The device is rated IP68 for dust and fresh-water resistance. Samsung describes the rating as resistance to fresh water up to 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. IP68 does not make the phone waterproof or suitable for deliberate underwater use. Rinse away residue and dry the phone after exposure; water resistance can diminish after damage, repair, or normal wear.
Display
The S21 FE has a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 2340 × 1080 FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung measures the screen as 6.4 inches across the full rectangle and approximately 6.3 inches when the rounded corners are accounted for. The hole-punch camera also means the entire front is not uninterrupted display.

A 120Hz mode makes scrolling, animations, and supported games appear smoother than a fixed 60Hz mode. It can also use more power, so battery consumption depends on brightness, applications, network conditions, and the selected display setting.
Samsung also lists a 240Hz touch-sampling rate in Game Mode. That figure describes touch input sampling in the specified mode; it is not the same as the display’s 120Hz refresh rate.
Galaxy S21 FE cameras
| Camera | Resolution | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Main wide | 12MP | General photography |
| Ultrawide | 12MP | Wider field of view for landscapes and groups |
| Telephoto | 8MP | More distant subjects and a tighter perspective |
| Front camera | 32MP | Selfies and video calls |
The dedicated telephoto camera gives the S21 FE more framing flexibility than a phone with only wide and ultrawide cameras. It should not, however, be assumed to deliver the same zoom quality as a newer flagship without model-specific testing.
Samsung promoted features including Portrait mode, Dual Recording, and AI-enhanced camera processing. Those are software and camera-system features, not guarantees of image quality. Results vary with lighting, motion, stabilization, autofocus behavior, processing, and the lens selected. Megapixel count alone does not establish sharpness, dynamic range, or low-light performance.
Performance, RAM, and storage
US versions use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 platform, identified on Samsung’s US sheet by the SDM8350 designation and manufactured on a 5nm process. Samsung’s US specification sheet lists 6GB of RAM paired with either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.
Samsung does not list microSD expansion on that US specification sheet, so buyers should not assume that storage can be expanded. Usable capacity is lower than the advertised number because system files and pre-installed software occupy part of the internal storage. The 128GB version is more likely to feel restrictive for users who keep large game installations, photos, or videos on the phone.
Some international listings include 8GB RAM configurations. Those figures should not automatically be applied to a US phone; confirm the storage and memory configuration for the exact model being sold.
Battery and charging
The battery is rated at 4,500mAh typical capacity and 4,370mAh rated or minimum capacity. These are different measurement figures, not contradictory specifications: typical capacity represents the commonly advertised value, while rated capacity is the guaranteed minimum under the relevant testing convention.

Samsung said 25W charging could add more than 50% in approximately 30 minutes under its stated conditions. That is Samsung’s claim, not a guaranteed result for every device. Temperature, battery level, charger, cable, and phone use can change charging speed.
The charger is sold separately, so check the contents of any new-old-stock or used bundle. Wireless charging requires a compatible pad and is slower than wired charging.
US cellular connectivity and carrier compatibility
Samsung lists LTE Cat 20, 5G Sub-6 GHz, and 5G mmWave support for the US model. The sheet also identifies standalone and non-standalone 5G modes, FDD and TDD support, CBRS, and legacy cellular technologies.

mmWave is a cellular 5G technology. It is unrelated to Wi-Fi 6, even though both may be described using high-speed connectivity language. Wi-Fi 6 is represented by the 802.11ax standard; it does not provide cellular service.

US versions also exist in carrier-specific forms, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and UScellular variants. Firmware, activation behavior, and supported network features can differ.
Before buying, check the exact model number under Settings → About phone, on the box, or on the device label. Common US designations include SM-G990U and SM-G990U1/DS, but the model number alone should be checked against the carrier’s current compatibility and whitelist information. For used phones, also confirm that the device is paid off, unlocked, and has a clean IMEI.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and ports
- Wi-Fi: 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, including Wi-Fi 6.
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.2 with Bluetooth Low Energy support.
- NFC: Supported; Samsung Pay and related services depend on market, carrier, and service-provider availability.
- Port: USB Type-C.
- Additional features: Samsung DeX and Wireless PowerShare.
SIM and eSIM considerations
Do not assume that every US Galaxy S21 FE supports eSIM in the same way. Physical SIM capability, eSIM activation, dual-SIM behavior, and carrier support can depend on the exact model and software build. Verify the model, carrier, and installed software before purchase rather than relying on a generic S21 FE listing.
Software and update context
The phone launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.0. Samsung’s North American support pages continued to host manuals, including One UI-related manual versions, in June 2025. Documentation availability is not the same as a promise of a current Android version or security-support period.
For a used unit, open Settings → About phone → Software information and check the installed Android version, One UI version, and security patch level. Carrier models may receive updates on different schedules. Do not buy based on an assumed remaining support window unless Samsung provides a current, model-specific policy or update statement.

The US specification sheet identifies the US phone with Snapdragon 888. Some international versions use Samsung’s Exynos 2100 processor instead. International pages also list 8GB RAM configurations that are not automatically US configurations.

Regional differences can extend to LTE and 5G bands, storage and memory combinations, SIM behavior, firmware, colors, warranty coverage, and carrier features. An imported model may activate poorly—or not at all—on a US carrier despite sharing the S21 FE name. It may also lack the bands needed for reliable coverage or have different VoLTE requirements.
Is the Galaxy S21 FE 5G still worth buying?
It can still make sense as a carefully verified, discounted or refurbished US phone. Its strongest specification combination includes a smooth 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 888 performance, IP68 protection, wireless charging, Wireless PowerShare, DeX, and a rear camera system with a dedicated telephoto lens.

The trade-offs are more significant in 2026. The Snapdragon 888 is older and generally less future-proof than newer Galaxy hardware, 6GB of RAM is modest by current flagship standards, 128GB can be limiting, and 25W wired charging is slower than many newer phones. A used battery may also have substantial wear, while screen damage, previous repairs, carrier locks, and uncertain update history add risk.
Choose a newer Galaxy FE or newer standard Galaxy S model if longer support, newer performance, and current warranty coverage matter most. A refurbished Galaxy S22 or S23 may suit buyers who want a used Samsung flagship, but value depends on condition, battery health, storage, warranty, and return policy. A current Galaxy A-series model may be a better fit for buyers prioritizing a new warranty and battery life over telephoto-camera hardware and DeX. Exact prices are not included here because used-market pricing changes by seller and condition.
Checklist before buying a used US model
- Confirm the model number: Match the phone to the intended US carrier and avoid assuming an imported SM-G990 variant is equivalent.
- Check unlock and IMEI status: Confirm that the device is paid off, not reported lost or stolen, and eligible for activation.
- Verify network compatibility: Check the carrier’s current compatibility tools for LTE, 5G, VoLTE, roaming, and eSIM requirements.
- Inspect the battery: Ask about battery health, charging behavior, overheating, and unexpected shutdowns.
- Inspect the screen and cameras: Look for cracks, burn-in, dead pixels, focus problems, lens damage, and signs of moisture.
- Ask about repairs: Previous repairs can affect water resistance and may involve non-original parts.
- Check software: Review the installed Android version, One UI version, and security patch under Settings → About phone → Software information.
- Confirm accessories: Check whether the bundle includes a compatible USB-C charger and cable; the original charger was not necessarily included.
- Get a return window: A written refurbisher warranty and return period are especially important for an older phone.
Samsung’s US support pages remain useful for checking documentation for the unlocked model and carrier-specific versions from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and UScellular.
Repair considerations
Samsung’s current US cracked-screen repair page has listed a $169 repair price for the Galaxy S21 FE 5G. Eligibility, parts availability, taxes, and the final quote can vary. Compare the repair cost with the phone’s condition and replacement value before authorizing service, especially if the battery or other components are also worn.
