The right fix depends on when the drain happens: during workouts, overnight, away from your phone, while idle, or while charging.
Start with a restart, updates, and a controlled test with high-drain features temporarily disabled. If the watch still drains rapidly while idle—or becomes unusually hot—check the charger and run Samsung Members diagnostics before considering service or replacement.

First, identify the drain pattern
“Dying fast” can describe several different problems. Note your exact watch model, case size, Bluetooth or LTE version, battery percentage at the start and end of a test, and the elapsed time. Also record whether the watch was worn, idle, tracking a workout, connected to your phone, using Wi-Fi or cellular service, or charging.

There is no universal “normal” runtime for every Galaxy Watch. Battery capacity varies by model and size: Samsung’s 2026 interim report lists 300 mAh for the 40-mm Galaxy Watch7, 425 mAh for the 44-mm Watch7, 590 mAh for the Galaxy Watch Ultra, and 325 mAh, 435 mAh, and 445 mAh for the 40-mm Watch8, 44-mm Watch8, and 46-mm Watch8 Classic respectively. Samsung also qualifies battery life by usage on its product pages. A small watch running GPS, LTE, health tracking, and a bright display can behave very differently from a larger Bluetooth model used mainly for notifications. The fastest fixes to try first
- Restart the watch. A restart can clear a temporarily stuck app, connection, or synchronization process.
- Update watch software and apps. In Galaxy Wearable, open Watch settings (or Settings), then About watch and Update watch software. For apps, open Galaxy Store → More options → My page → Update. Labels vary by watch generation. Samsung’s official troubleshooting steps
- Turn off Always-On Display for a test. Also try a simpler watch face, lower or automatic brightness, a shorter screen timeout, and fewer notification wake-ups.
- End every workout. A workout or navigation session left running can keep GPS and sensors active after you think you have finished.
- Reduce unnecessary connections. Set Wi-Fi and mobile networks to Auto or turn them off temporarily when Bluetooth is reliably connected.
- Temporarily disable unused continuous health measurements. Test sleep, automatic heart-rate, stress, blood-oxygen, skin-temperature, and other background features individually rather than disabling everything permanently.
- Use Power Saving as a short-term test. The option is usually under Settings → Battery and device care → Battery → Power saving, although some models use Settings → Battery → Power saving.
LTE is often the hidden cause
On an LTE Galaxy Watch, mobile-network activity can consume substantially more power when the watch is away from the phone, handling standalone calls or data, streaming, or repeatedly searching for service. Weak coverage is particularly important: the watch may work harder to maintain or find a network.
For a controlled comparison, keep the watch connected to your phone by Bluetooth and set mobile networks to Auto or turn them off. Compare battery loss over a similar period, then repeat the test away from the phone if standalone LTE use matters to you. Turning mobile networks off limits carrier-based calls, messages, and apps, so treat this as a diagnosis rather than a universal permanent setting. Check Wi-Fi, GPS, and location activity
Wi-Fi is usually unnecessary when Bluetooth is working reliably, but it becomes useful when the phone is out of range. Repeatedly searching for a weak Wi-Fi connection can increase consumption. On the watch, check Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi and choose Auto or turn it off for the test. If you use remote connection in Galaxy Wearable, disabling Wi-Fi may prevent the watch from reaching the phone remotely when Bluetooth is unavailable.

Display and watch-face settings
The display is an easy category to test because the changes are reversible. Turn off Always-On Display, reduce brightness, shorten screen timeout, and disable wake-on-notification if the screen constantly lights up. Animated faces and faces with weather, health, location, or other live complications may refresh data frequently. A basic Samsung face with few complications is a useful comparison.
The trade-off is convenience: these settings reduce glanceability and may make notifications less immediate. Health tracking can contribute to overnight drain
Sleep tracking, blood oxygen during sleep, continuous heart-rate monitoring, stress monitoring, skin-temperature tracking, irregular-rhythm features, and frequent workouts all add workload. Several enabled together may explain why a watch loses much more power overnight than during a quiet daytime period.

Test one feature at a time where possible. A periodic measurement setting may be a better compromise than disabling health tracking entirely. Turning off a feature removes or reduces its corresponding data, so do not disable medically important monitoring without considering why you use it and following relevant clinical advice.
Look for an app or software process
A recently installed watch app, streaming music, navigation, messaging synchronization, a data-heavy watch face, or a system process stuck in a loop can cause sudden drain. The timing matters, but it does not prove that a particular firmware update is defective. After an update, background setup, app updates, indexing, or synchronization may temporarily increase activity.
Update both firmware and apps, restart the watch, remove apps installed shortly before the problem, and use a simple watch face for a day. Do not install unofficial “battery reset” apps, hidden-menu tools, or firmware files. If the problem persists, submit an error report through Samsung Members. A factory reset is a later software test—not a guaranteed repair.
Make sure the watch is actually charging
A watch that displays a charging icon but never reaches a genuine full charge can appear to have terrible battery life. Remove the watch from the charger and inspect both surfaces. Dirt, sweat, moisture, debris, misalignment, a damaged puck, or an incompatible accessory can interrupt charging.

- Let the watch and charger dry completely after water or heavy sweat exposure.
- Re-seat the watch carefully on a Samsung-approved compatible charger or dock.
- Try a known-good Samsung-compatible charging accessory.
- Confirm that the percentage rises consistently for at least 15–30 minutes.
Stop using the setup and seek support if the watch or charger becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal, shows swelling, or has visible damage. Temperature can accelerate the problem
Very hot or cold conditions can shorten battery life and may damage the battery. Common examples include leaving the watch in a hot car, charging it under bedding or in direct sun, combining GPS and LTE in hot weather, exercising in extreme cold, or charging immediately after a demanding workout while the watch is still hot.
Move it to a moderate environment and let it return to a normal temperature gradually. Do not put the watch in a refrigerator or freezer.

- Record whether the watch is LTE or Bluetooth, and whether it is connected to the phone.
- Use it normally for one period and record the ending percentage.
- Repeat for a similar period with Always-On Display off, a simple watch face, Wi-Fi and mobile networks set to Auto or off when unnecessary, no active workout, and unused continuous health measurements disabled.
- Compare the percentage loss over the same duration.
A large improvement points to settings, workload, or connectivity. Little improvement—especially with idle heat or charging irregularities—points toward software, charging hardware, or battery condition.
Use Samsung Members diagnostics
On a compatible paired Samsung phone, open Samsung Members and look for connected-device diagnostics for the watch. Availability depends on the watch, phone, app version, software, connection, and region. Lithium-ion batteries gradually lose capacity with age and charge cycles. Battery aging is more likely when runtime has declined steadily over months or years, the watch shuts down at a nonzero percentage, the percentage falls in large jumps, it becomes hot during light use, diagnostics fail, or it remains poor after a reset and minimal configuration.

Repair availability, eligibility, cost, and method vary by model, country, warranty status, and damage. Contact Samsung or the retailer when the watch drains rapidly while idle, overheats during light use or charging, has swelling or liquid damage, cannot hold a charge with a known-good approved charger, or continues to fail after troubleshooting.

Power Saving can limit or disable Wi-Fi, mobile data, background networking, syncing, vibration, wake functions, brightness, screen timeout, and performance, depending on the model. It is useful during travel, an emergency, or a diagnostic test, but it does not repair an underlying fault.
For a more extreme option, search Settings for Watch only. The usual path is Settings → Battery and device care → Battery → Watch only → Turn on. This extends battery life by retaining basic watch functions while removing smart features. Use it when you need the time but not apps, connectivity, or health functions.
Reset only after simpler tests fail
Before a factory reset, back up watch data through Galaxy Wearable where supported, record LTE/eSIM and carrier-activation details, ensure you know your Samsung account credentials, and note installed apps and watch faces. After resetting, test the watch with default settings and minimal apps before restoring everything.
A reset is reasonable when the drain began after a major software change, no individual setting or app explains it, the watch is otherwise responsive, and updates and restarts have failed. If it still drains rapidly after setup is complete and minimal configuration, hardware, battery aging, charger issues, or a firmware defect become more likely.
Should you replace the watch?
Do not buy a new Galaxy Watch before testing the charger, connections, settings, and battery diagnostics. Replacement makes more sense when a battery or hardware problem is established, the watch is outside a useful service period, or its capacity no longer matches your routine.
- Choose Bluetooth if your phone is normally nearby and maximum connectivity endurance matters more than standalone calls and data.
- Choose a larger case if you want more battery capacity; the smallest Watch8 has 325 mAh versus 435 mAh in the 44-mm model.
- Consider the Ultra if endurance and outdoor use justify its larger size and price. Samsung lists its battery at 590 mAh, but GPS, LTE, and heavy use can still drain it quickly.
- Choose Watch8 or Watch8 Classic based on size, design, LTE needs, and battery capacity—not simply because it is newer.

The quickest path is to restart, update the watch and apps, test with Always-On Display, LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, active workouts, and unused continuous health tracking disabled, then verify charging with an approved compatible charger. If rapid idle drain, heat, shutdowns, charging failure, or failed diagnostics remain, the battery or watch hardware—not another setting—is the likely problem.
