The Seiko Prospex SPB185J1 pairs a black dial and brushed metallic bezel with a distinctive seconds hand whose luminous white-and-red tip resembles a small shovel. It is a 42 mm stainless-steel automatic diver with 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance and Seiko’s 6R35 movement. The shovel shape is a visual signature, not a separately documented technical feature.
What makes the SPB185’s seconds hand distinctive?
The seconds hand ends in a luminous white-and-red shovel-like tip. Monochrome calls the shape shovel-like, while Fratello highlights the red accent as a detail that distinguishes the watch visually. That is a design interpretation: the available product information does not assign the shape a special function beyond its role as the seconds hand.

How to interpret the 6R35 movement figures
Seiko specifies an approximately 70-hour power reserve for the 6R35 and a factory precision range of +25 to -15 seconds per day. The reserve describes operation when the movement is fully wound; it is not a promise that every wearing pattern will keep the watch wound for that long. Seiko’s 6R35 instruction manual says actual daily rate can vary with conditions including wearing time, temperature, arm movement and how fully the mainspring is wound. Treat the stated precision as a manufacturer specification, not a guaranteed result for a particular watch.

Fit, straps and bracelet
For fit, weigh the 42 mm diameter together with the 48.8 mm lug-to-lug length, 12.5 mm thickness and 186 g listed weight. Wrist shape and preferred fit matter as much as diameter, so the figures are most useful when compared with a watch you already find comfortable.
The 20 mm lug width is a useful starting point if considering a strap change. It does not guarantee that every 20 mm aftermarket strap or bracelet end link will fit properly; check the attachment and end-link compatibility of the specific accessory.

The bracelet is a three-link design with a clasp and diving extension, as described by Monochrome. Fratello praises the dial layout and lume and offers a subjective criticism of the bracelet’s design, while also saying it suits the watch. Those are review opinions, not a universal comfort verdict or a substitute for trying the watch on.
How it relates to the SPB187
Monochrome presents the SPB185 and blue-dial SPB187 as reinterpretations of Seiko’s 1968 diver design. In that comparison, the SPB185 is the black-dial version with a brushed metallic bezel insert; the SPB187 has a blue dial and black bezel insert. Monochrome reported a launch price of EUR 1,250 and availability from November 2020. Those are historical launch details, not current price or stock information.
