What is the Stewart Dawson Darkest Hour?
The Darkest Hour is an automatic watch collection offered in black, blue, and brown dial variants on Stewart Dawson’s current collection page. The brand links the design to Winston Churchill and to an earlier Stewart Dawson military-watch style. Its current Brown page describes it as “Inspired by a rare Stewart Dawson military timepiece from the early 1900s”; that is the brand’s heritage claim, not independently established history.
The visual formula is straightforward: a matte vintage-style dial, prominent luminous Arabic numerals, and a hinged double caseback engraved with a Churchill quote. Stewart Dawson says the quote is selected at random, so buyers should not expect a particular quotation unless the seller confirms the example in hand.
Specifications depend on the generation
The current Brown listing and the older 1940.A.SS.DH references do not describe one universal specification. In particular, the case diameter, water-resistance rating, date display, and some strap details differ. Use the table to identify which set applies to the watch being offered.

How it looks and wears
Oracle Time’s reviewer, writing about a 42 mm example in February 2021, said the case “wears rather nicely” and praised the execution of the vintage pilot-watch look. The reviewer personally disliked the dial texture and the random Churchill quote on the caseback. Those are one reviewer’s impressions, not a hands-on assessment of the current 39 mm version.

The size change matters when judging fit: a 39 mm case with a 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement is not interchangeable on the wrist with the older 42 mm case. The current Brown page does not state lug width, so do not assume an older 22 mm strap will fit the newer model. Ask the seller for the exact reference and measurement before ordering a replacement.
What the hinged caseback adds—and what it does not
The double caseback is the Darkest Hour’s most distinctive feature. Its hinged outer cover gives the watch a period-inspired detail and carries a Churchill quotation, while also making the back more unusual than a plain exhibition or screw-down caseback. The quote is random according to the brand, which makes it a design feature rather than a way to choose a specific Churchill line.

The feature’s appeal is personal: it may be a meaningful nod to the theme, or an unnecessary complication for someone who prefers a simple caseback. The cited sources do not establish a functional benefit or independent durability testing for the hinged construction.
Price and availability: treat listings as snapshots
When accessed in 2026, Stewart Dawson’s current collection page displayed €1,350 and marked the listed variants sold out. Older official pages displayed $1,150, while Oracle Time reported €900 for the 42 mm reference it reviewed in 2021. These figures come from different listings, dates, and product generations; they are not a like-for-like current price comparison. Confirm price, currency, reference, condition, and stock directly with the seller before purchase.
