The Straum Jan Mayen’s strongest case is its combination of a compact 38.7 mm footprint, a highly worked landscape-inspired dial and a date-free La Joux-Perret automatic movement. The current Black Sand steel listing pairs those features with a 10 ATM rating and a choice of steel bracelet or proprietary integrated rubber strap. Its appeal depends on whether the dial and design justify the price for you; fit, strap choice and the destination-specific final cost deserve checking before ordering.
What is the Straum Jan Mayen?
The Jan Mayen is a design-led sports watch from Norwegian brand Straum. Straum says its dial is custom-designed, stamped in multiple stages, then treated and painted through several stages, including fumé finishing; the indices use Swiss Super-LumiNova Grade A. The result is the watch’s defining feature, rather than a conventional flat sports-watch dial. Straum’s display back shows the automatic movement.

The design’s name and landscape reference come from Beerenberg, the volcano on the remote Norwegian island of Jan Mayen. The original collaboration drew on that inspiration and developed from Straum’s Opphav design, according to Fratello’s 2023 announcement. Later titanium-and-rubber versions continued the line, but earlier launch details do not establish what is available now.

How does the Jan Mayen fit?
A 38.7 mm diameter and 45.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement make the listed steel watch compact by case dimensions, while its 11.5 mm thickness includes the domed crystal. Those numbers are useful starting points, not a promise of fit: wrist shape, bracelet sizing and personal preference all matter. If possible, compare the dimensions with a watch you already wear comfortably.
Steel bracelet
Straum lists the bracelet as 24.8 mm wide at the case, tapering to 18 mm, with micro-adjustment. The brand gives an approximate wrist range of 13–20 cm for this listed bracelet. Check sizing and adjustment details for your chosen configuration before purchase.
Integrated FKM rubber
The rubber option uses Straum’s proprietary Coupling interface. The stated interface means a generic strap should not be assumed to fit as a drop-in replacement simply because its width appears suitable.
What does the movement offer?
The G101 is an automatic, time-only movement: there is no date display or date position to operate. Its stated 68-hour reserve can be useful if you take the watch off for a day or two, though actual running time depends on the watch’s condition and use. Straum specifies 24 jewels and adjustment in four positions. Its published rate figures should be read as specifications, not as proof of measured performance on a particular example.

How is the titanium version different?
The Frozen Metal Titanium is a separate configuration, not just a material description for the Black Sand listing. Fratello’s July 14, 2026 hands-on review describes a Grade 5 titanium case with bead-blasted surfaces and polished facets, and covers the watch on a Grade 5 titanium bracelet; the article also notes Straum’s FKM options. Its reported dimensions, crystal, water resistance and movement family are the same as the steel model, while its movement is identified as a Soigné-grade G101.

The independent impressions are specific to the titanium watch and its reviewer. Thomas Van Straaten of Fratello said its 38.7 mm form fit his 18 cm wrist comfortably and described the titanium watch as light and comfortable. He praised the dial treatment and bracelet finishing, but found visible gaps at the butterfly clasp’s micro-adjustment and said its small pushers felt less solid to him. As he put it, “The real game-changer, however, is the titanium build.” These are one reviewer’s observations, not a hands-on assessment of the steel Black Sand model. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the Jan Mayen cost, and what should buyers check?
When Straum’s Black Sand page was accessed on October 7, 2026, it showed 25,500 NOK including Norwegian VAT, with preorder shipping shown for November 2026. The same listing stated a two-year warranty and free 14-day returns. These are time- and destination-sensitive store details, not a guaranteed current quote.
Fratello reported Frozen Metal Titanium prices of €2,260 on the titanium bracelet or €2,000 on FKM rubber in its July 14, 2026 article; it said bracelet preorder delivery was scheduled for December 2026. Those figures are historical reporting for that variant and date, not a current offer.

Is the Straum Jan Mayen worth buying?
The Jan Mayen makes the most sense for someone who prioritizes a distinctive, multi-stage dial treatment in a compact sports-watch case and values a no-date automatic movement with a long stated reserve. The steel Black Sand option gives buyers a bracelet or proprietary FKM route; the titanium version changes the case and bracelet material and has its own price and availability picture. The trade-off is that its design-led character and variant-specific configuration require more careful comparison than a generic specification sheet can provide. Weigh the dial in person if possible, verify how the 45.7 mm length sits on your wrist, and judge the landed price and strap choice for the exact model you intend to order.
