The Straum Opphav stands out for a stamped, nature-inspired dial and a sculptural semi-display caseback that frames a Norwegian landscape. In his April 2022 hands-on review, Rob Nudds found the design unusually ambitious for a watch using the familiar Sellita SW200-1; a second reviewer praised its strap and caseback but noted fit and legibility considerations. Its launch-era price was €829 excluding taxes, not a current price, and Straum’s official pages now list the Opphav variants as sold out.
What the Opphav is—and what makes it distinctive
Straum presents the Opphav as a Norwegian-designed, Swiss-made watch. The brand describes its dial as inspired by textures found in Norwegian nature; that is the maker’s design description, rather than an independent verification of origin. The central visual idea is a floating, textured dial with a lacquer finish and applied hour markers. Its relief-like surface gives the watch a more individual character than a plain dial, while the shaped caseback continues the landscape theme.

Rob Nudds’s Fratello review, published April 14, 2022, describes the back as a semi-display design. JP Ishaq’s June 15, 2022 review for The Time Bum describes two sapphire windows around a relief of mountains and a fjord, with movement components visible behind them. These are reviewer descriptions of the design, not a claim that the entire movement is exposed through a conventional full display back.

How it wears: size, strap and legibility
Case proportions
The 41 mm diameter is only part of the fit picture: the reported 46.6 mm lug-to-lug length and 22 mm lug width also matter. The available reviews establish those dimensions but do not provide a controlled fit comparison across wrist sizes. If you are considering one secondhand, compare the lug-to-lug measurement with a watch you already find comfortable rather than relying on diameter alone.
Strap compatibility
The stock leather strap is listed as 22/20 mm, and The Time Bum reports that standard 22 mm straps can be used. Ishaq liked the strap but found it thick and initially stiff on the sample he handled. That is an individual reviewer’s experience, not evidence that every strap or every Opphav will feel the same. A replacement search should start with the 22 mm lug width, then verify the particular strap’s width, taper, thickness and attachment before purchase.

White-dial contrast
Ishaq reported that the white-dial sample could show less contrast between the hands and dial in daylight. Treat that as a reviewer’s observation about one sample and lighting conditions, not a universal fault across colors or examples. For a watch where quick time-reading matters, inspect the specific dial variant in bright ambient light if possible.
Movement and the shaped caseback
The SW200-1 is a conventional choice compared with the Opphav’s more unusual exterior. Nudds says he personally tends to prefer closed, well-decorated backs over seeing a Sellita, but found the Swiss-made movement satisfying in a watch with an ambitious design and what he considered a reasonable price point. That is his assessment, not an objective movement test or a claim that the caliber is specially decorated.

The caseback presentation is therefore a meaningful part of the watch’s identity: it shows parts of the movement while making the Nordic landscape relief the focal point. Buyers who mainly want an unobstructed view of a caliber may prefer a traditional display back; those drawn to the Opphav’s setting and sculptural design may find the compromise more distinctive.

As observed October 4, 2026, Straum’s official Opphav Black product page is marked “Sold out.” The brand’s official archive lists the Black, Blue, White, Green and Damascus Opphav variants as sold out. These pages do not show current Opphav availability; they do not establish whether a watch is available from a resale seller. The 2022 prices and limited-production figure above should not be used as a guide to today’s secondary-market asking prices.

For a used example, assess the individual watch rather than assuming that a sold-out listing guarantees condition or completeness. Confirm the exact dial variant, case and crystal condition, movement operation, included strap or bracelet, and whether the seller can substantiate the watch’s provenance. The cited reviews provide no current resale-market statistics or controlled comparison among all Opphav variants.

Who the Straum Opphav suits
- Consider it if: you want a textured, unusually presented dial and a caseback that treats the landscape as part of the design.
- Think carefully if: legibility in bright light, a slim or immediately supple strap, or a conventional open movement view is a priority.
- When comparing alternatives: weigh case and lug-to-lug fit, dial color and contrast, movement and back presentation, water resistance, strap or bracelet setup, and the actual asking price for the specific watch.
