The Toledano & Chan B/1 is a time-only automatic watch built around an asymmetric stainless-steel case, an integrated bracelet and a lapis lazuli dial. Its distinctive shape draws on brutalist architecture and the sculptural watch designs of the 1970s; its appeal is visual and material, rather than a long list of sports features.
What is the Toledano & Chan B/1?
The B/1 is the first watch from the collaboration between artist Phil Toledano and designer Alfred Chan. It pairs a left-facing, or “destro,” crown with a sculptural head and an integrated bracelet, so the case and bracelet read as a connected design rather than separate components. The dial is lapis lazuli, and the head, bracelet and clasp are made from 904 stainless steel. A sapphire crystal covers the dial, while the caseback is closed. The official product page lists 175 numbered pieces.

It is a time-only design: launch coverage describes hours and minutes, with no date display or additional complications. The brand frames the watch as a sculpture and materials story, not as a movement-led proposition.

Toledano said the collaborators began with shared interests rather than a conventional product brief: “We didn’t really set out to design a watch at all, we were just interested in the same things: brutalist architecture and integrated bracelet watches.” He traced the watch’s head to the window of the Marcel Breuer-designed Breuer Building, formerly the Whitney Museum and now Sotheby’s headquarters.

The architectural reference informs the B/1’s hard-edged, asymmetric silhouette. Toledano has described brutalism as an interplay of hard lines, light and shadow that creates geometric forms; Chan summarized the case’s contrast with its crown this way: “Everything is straight except for the crown.” The result is a watch whose strongest claim is its continuous sculptural shape, not conventional symmetry or visual restraint. Sotheby’s likewise describes the design as an integrated-bracelet watch built around a continuous concept.

These are specifications published by the brand, not independently tested findings. The angled thickness and asymmetric form make the listed dimensions less directly comparable to those of a conventional round watch. Since the bracelet is integrated, its fit is especially important; the listed full length is 19.5 cm, and the brand says extra links can be arranged by email.

Movement, water resistance and practical use
The current official product page specifies a Sellita SW100 automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Contemporary launch coverage was inconsistent: Fratello reported a Sellita SW200 and 41-hour reserve, while Time+Tide listed the SW100 and 42 hours. For the current published specification, the brand’s product page is the clearest reference.
The B/1 is not presented as a pool-ready sports watch. Its 5 ATM rating comes with the brand’s plain-language guidance: “wear it in the rain, not in the pool.” Treat that as the maker’s usage advice, not a report of an independent water-resistance test.

How much does the Toledano & Chan B/1 cost?
The current official product page lists the B/1 at US$6,300 in the United States and US$5,700 internationally. Those are the prices shown on the brand’s page, not a claim about taxes, shipping or the final amount in every country. The page lists a 175-piece numbered edition, but current inventory status is not established here.

The B/1 makes the most sense for someone drawn to architectural form, an integrated bracelet and the distinctive texture of lapis lazuli. Its asymmetric case and design-first priorities set it apart from a conventional everyday sports watch. If you want a date display, a broad set of complications or water resistance intended for swimming, the B/1’s time-only layout and the brand’s own rain-only guidance point elsewhere.

The documented US$35,560 result for a B/1M prototype at Phillips concerns a separate prototype, not the standard B/1, and is not a useful substitute for its retail price.
