You do not need a subscription to use a Google Pixel Watch. Steps, calories, GPS workouts, sleep, and heart-rate tracking remain available through the watch’s Google Health and Fitbit integration. The recurring charge applies mainly to interpretation and coaching: advanced insights, personalized recommendations, guided exercise, mindfulness content, stress analysis, and selected Pixel Watch 3 running features. That split makes the watch’s total cost higher for owners who want more than raw sensor data.
What Pixel Watch owners get without Premium
The free tier covers the measurements most people expect from a smartwatch. A Pixel Watch can record daily steps and calories, track GPS activities, monitor sleep, and measure heart rate. These functions provide data rather than an ongoing coaching program, so someone who only wants activity totals and basic history can use the watch without a monthly bill.

Google and independent testing coverage both describe this baseline tracking as free. Canceling a subscription does not disable the watch’s sensors or erase its role as an activity and sleep tracker.
What Google Health Premium adds
Google says every new user receives a three-month Google Health Premium trial. Its help documentation describes Premium as personalized guidance built with Gemini, including advanced insights and recommendations from the Google Health Coach. In practical terms, the service attempts to explain trends and suggest actions instead of merely displaying measurements.

The distinction is important: the watch can collect a heart-rate or sleep reading for free, while the service that interprets patterns and turns them into a plan may require Premium.

Google notes that some functions require the Fitbit mobile app and/or a Fitbit Premium subscription. Therefore, buying a Pixel Watch does not guarantee that every feature advertised for the platform appears on the watch itself; some are delivered through the phone app, and availability can vary by country, device and account eligibility.

Those are one-time hardware prices. Subscription pricing is separate and depends on market and offer eligibility. Android Central’s review recorded Fitbit Premium at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year and reported a six-month membership with every new device at the time of its review. Treat those figures as dated review pricing, not a universal current price list.
Google’s UK Health page gives a different example: eligible new and returning users receive three months, then pay £7.99 per month with recurring billing and cancellation available at any time. Trials are not automatically universal; the offer is limited to qualifying accounts and markets. Check the price and renewal date shown in your Google or Fitbit account before starting a trial.

Illustrative first-year cost
For a US buyer using the $9.99 monthly figure for nine months after a three-month trial, the subscription portion would be $89.91, in addition to the watch price. An annual $79.99 plan would be cheaper than nine monthly payments if that plan and its terms are offered to the account. This is an illustration based on the dated figures above, not a promise of current pricing.
Is the paywall actually getting worse?
There is a legitimate consumer argument that a premium health service makes an increasingly expensive product feel less complete. The hardware purchase buys sensors, while the most actionable layer—coaching, explanations, recommendations and substantial content libraries—can require recurring payment. That concern is strongest for buyers who expect a watch to include all health software after purchase.

However, the available evidence does not establish a measured, year-by-year expansion of the paywall. Official pages document which features are gated now, and reviews document particular prices and trial offers, but they do not provide a longitudinal count proving that more functions have moved behind Premium over time. “Getting worse” is therefore a value judgment about recurring costs, not a verified statistic.
Who should pay and who should skip it?
Premium is most useful for
- Runners who want Pixel Watch 3 running-form insights or AI-powered recommendations.
- People who prefer guided workout and mindfulness libraries to creating their own routines.
- Owners who want trend interpretation and coaching rather than isolated measurements.
- Users willing to pay for convenience, accountability and a structured wellness plan.
The free tier is usually enough for
- Step, calorie, heart-rate and sleep tracking.
- GPS recording for walks, runs and other activities.
- Readers who already use another training, meditation or coaching service.
- Anyone unwilling to accept a recurring fee after the trial ends.
How to avoid an unwanted renewal
- Start the trial only after checking the displayed end date, price, billing interval and eligibility in your Google or Fitbit account.
- Set a calendar reminder several days before renewal.
- In the subscription settings linked to the account that activated the offer, choose the cancellation option and confirm the end date.
- After cancellation, verify that the account shows an expiration date rather than an active recurring plan; core tracking should remain available.
If a feature disappears during a trial or after cancellation, first check whether it is app-only, market-limited or explicitly marked as Premium. Updating the Fitbit mobile app and confirming that the watch is connected to the correct account can resolve display and entitlement confusion.
Bottom line for Pixel Watch buyers
Pixel Watch 3 is not unusable without Fitbit or Google Health Premium: its core sensors and tracking remain free. The paywall changes the value proposition by charging for interpretation, coaching and content that many buyers consider the reason to own a health-focused smartwatch. Include the likely subscription in your budget, verify the offer for your country, and buy Premium only if those advanced services—not basic data collection—are what you want.
