The classic form uses elastic made from, or inspired by, French-issue parachute webbing; historic examples are often green with a yellow or red central thread. It is not automatically the same thing as a NATO strap, and a modern listing marked “MN style” does not by itself prove military provenance.
What a Marine Nationale strap is
The name refers to the French Navy’s watch-strap culture rather than to one universally standardized commercial product. French Navy divers commonly wore watches on fabric straps, and the best-known MN form is a single-pass elastic band that slips under the watch and adjusts around the wrist.

TUDOR’s official history records two broad strap types used by divers and combat swimmers: black braided nylon and, more rarely, handmade straps made from elastic bands recycled from French-issue parachutes. TUDOR describes the latter as recognizable by green elastic with a central yellow or red thread. That color combination is a useful historical clue, not a certificate that a modern strap is genuine military surplus.
MN strap history and the watches that used it
French Navy Submariners
TUDOR says the French Navy adopted Submariner reference 7928 when it became available in 1959. Watches ordered by the Navy were typically supplied without metal bracelets, leaving fabric as the practical field option. Later examples were used by Marine nationale divers.

M.N. engravings and continued service
Reference 7016 was the first TUDOR model to receive “TUDOR M.N.” engravings in 1974, followed by the issue year. Deliveries of reference 9401 to the French Navy continued into the 1980s, while some diving-school and combat-swimmer users continued using the watches into the 2000s.
MN versus NATO: the practical difference

Both are single-piece alternatives to a bracelet, but they are not interchangeable terms. Some sellers use “NATO,” “MN style” and “parachute strap” loosely, so inspect the construction instead of relying on the label.

How to size an MN strap
1. Measure the lug width
- Remove the existing strap or measure the clear distance between the inside faces of the watch lugs.
- Record the measurement in millimetres. A nominal 19 mm watch needs a strap that can seat securely without forcing the spring bars; the same check applies to 20 mm and 22 mm watches.
NDC specifies its approximately 21 mm Original MN Strap for watches with 19–22 mm lug spacing. That range is a product specification, not a universal rule: other straps may be cut to one exact width.
2. Check the length for your wrist and clothing
Measure your wrist circumference where the watch will sit, then allow for a wetsuit cuff, jacket sleeve or other layer if you will wear one over clothing. NDC says its standard length fits XS through XL and offers custom lengths. A strap that is technically wide enough can still be impractical if the tail leaves too little room for the keeper or too much loose elastic.

3. Confirm the hardware path
Look at how the strap threads through its hook, buckle and keeper. Elastic MN designs vary: some are highly adjustable single-pass bands, while cable bracelets and nylon straps use entirely different hardware. Verify that the supplied spring bars and the strap’s end shape suit your case before installation.
What to check before buying
- Material provenance: Prefer a listing that identifies whether the elastic is new production, new-old-stock (NOS) military material, or reproduction webbing. “Parachute-inspired” does not establish French military origin.
- Width: Match the watch’s measured lug spacing. For a 19, 20 or 22 mm case, confirm the seller’s stated tolerance rather than assuming a nominal width will work.
- Length: Include wrist size and any wetsuit or sleeve. Ask for a custom length when the standard range is unsuitable.
- Construction: Check the elastic’s weave, center thread, stitching, hook, buckle and keeper arrangement. A black cable or ordinary braided nylon is a different design from the classic elastic MN strap.
- Authenticity wording: Treat green elastic with a yellow or red center thread as a historical cue only. No color pattern alone can verify provenance.

The official Mach 2 bracelet is a different purchase
The Marine nationale boutique’s Mach 2 bracelet uses 17 cable strands with a 3.7 mm cable diameter. Its black cable is described as drawing on aircraft control-surface and electrical-contact cables associated with fusiliers and commandos. It therefore offers official branding and a distinct metal-cable feel, but it should not be represented as a parachute-elastic MN strap.

Choosing the right route for your watch
Choose an elastic MN strap when
- You already own a compatible watch and want the single-pass elastic feel.
- You can verify lug width and obtain a length suited to your wrist or wetsuit.
- The seller clearly distinguishes genuine or NOS material from reproduction webbing.
Choose the Mach 2 cable bracelet when
- You specifically want the official Marine nationale cable design.
- Your wrist matches one of its listed 17, 18, 19, 20 or 21.5 cm sizes.
- You prefer cable construction over elastic tension.
Choose the Navygraf route when
- You want a complete watch with Marine Nationale partnership branding.
- The 39 mm case, 19 mm lugs and 300 m water resistance suit your use.
- Two included straps and a collector’s patch are more useful than sourcing a separate replacement strap.
Installation and use checks
- Confirm both spring bars are fully seated in the lug holes before putting the watch on.
- Thread the single-pass strap according to its hook, buckle and keeper design, keeping the watch centered on the wrist.
- Adjust the elastic so the case cannot slide over the hand but does not compress the wrist.
- After the first wear, inspect stitching, elastic edges, hardware and spring-bar engagement. Replace a strap showing fraying, stretched holes or damaged hardware.
The most historically faithful choice is a clearly documented elastic strap made from new or NOS French parachute material. A black nylon strap, the official Mach 2 cable bracelet and a complete Navygraf watch may all be legitimate Marine nationale-related products, but each represents a different construction and buying decision.
