The right watch depends on what you want it to do: tell time with minimal fuss, complement what you wear, track activity, or connect to your phone. Start with that purpose, then compare movement or features, fit, water-resistance information, care needs, and what you want to spend. There is no single best choice for every wrist or routine.
Choose the kind of watch that fits your routine
The first decision is whether you want a traditional watch, a smartwatch, or both. Traditional watches focus on timekeeping and personal style; smartwatches add interactive features whose usefulness depends on your needs and, often, your phone ecosystem.
- Choose a traditional watch if you primarily want a timepiece for daily wear, a particular look, or an occasion, and prefer not to make your choice around connected features.
- Choose a smartwatch if you will use its features, such as fitness functions or phone-connected tools, and are willing to consider usability and battery performance as part of the purchase.
- Compare both categories if you want different watches for different settings. Decide which needs each one must meet rather than expecting one watch to do everything.
Before looking at models, set a budget and note your daily activities, preferred appearance, desired features, fit requirements, and tolerance for upkeep. The available category-level evidence does not establish a universally best model, current prices, or current availability.
Understand traditional watch movements
A traditional watch’s movement is its timekeeping mechanism. The main categories to compare are quartz and mechanical.

Quartz
Quartz watches typically use a battery-powered movement, according to Jewelers of America’s watch-buying guide. If you are considering one, check the maker’s information about the specific watch and its care. The general description alone does not establish a model’s accuracy, service cost, or lifespan.
Mechanical
Mechanical watches use a mechanical movement rather than the typical battery-powered quartz movement. If you are drawn to this category, ask the seller or maker what upkeep the specific watch calls for and what it may cost; the available general guidance does not establish service intervals or costs for individual models.

What “chronometer” means
“Chronometer” is not simply another word for any watch. ISO 6426-2:2026 defines it as the official name for a precision timekeeping instrument regulated for various conditions of use. The definition also describes approval by an impartial official body, which inspects the instrument or movement and grants an individual rating certificate. Do not assume a watch is certified just because it is described as precise: look for evidence of certification for that particular watch.
Compare a smartwatch by the features you will actually use
A smartwatch comparison is about more than its feature list. Consider whether its interface is comfortable to use, how its battery performance fits your routine, which fitness functions matter to you, how it is built, and whether the tested water-resistance information matches your intended use. Check compatibility with your phone and the specific features you expect to rely on.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide compares individual models, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra (47mm) LTE, Garmin Venu 3, OnePlus Watch 2, and Apple Watch Series 9 GPS + Cellular (41mm). Its scores and prices apply to that edition and are snapshots, not lasting recommendations; check current model specifications, availability, independent testing, and prices before buying. Those examples do not establish that any one model is right for your needs.

Do not treat a water-resistance marking as a universal promise that a watch is suitable for every activity involving water. ISO 22810:2010 is the published ISO standard titled Horology — Water-resistant watches. The standard’s existence does not prove that a particular watch was tested to it or complies with it. Check the watch maker’s current specifications and instructions for the model you are considering, and match them to the conditions in which you plan to wear it.

- Watch JIU
Jewelers of America advises that a watch should not be exposed to water or moisture if its water resistance was not clearly specified at purchase. ISO’s explainer, published on 3 November 2010, describes manufacturer ratings as a way to help customers identify suitable environments and discusses ISO 22810’s intended protections. That explanation is useful context, but it is not evidence that a particular watch meets the standard or a substitute for the model’s instructions. Do not infer a universal conversion from a marked depth to a permitted water activity.
Water resistance is only one aspect of durability. ISO’s catalogue also lists standards covering such subjects as resistance to wear, scratching, and impacts for watch cases and accessories, as well as watch glasses, hard external parts, magnetic resistance, shock resistance, and watch batteries. A catalogue entry identifies a standard’s scope; it does not establish that a particular product passed a test. For a model-specific claim, look for the maker’s documentation or a relevant test report.

Check fit, appearance, and care before you buy
- Fit: Try the watch on if possible. Check how the case sits on your wrist, whether the strap or bracelet feels comfortable, and whether you can use the controls easily.
- Appearance: Consider whether the watch works with the clothes and settings where you expect to wear it. A style you enjoy wearing regularly may matter more than features you seldom use.
- Build and use: For either category, consider the materials and construction against your everyday activities. For a smartwatch, include ease of use and battery performance in this check.
- Care: Read the manufacturer’s care instructions before purchase. Ask what upkeep the specific watch needs rather than relying on a general service interval or assuming all movements require the same attention.
- Budget: Compare the total commitment with the value of the features and upkeep that matter to you. Do not rely on an older guide’s model price as a current quote.
Use a short buying checklist
- Write down your main purpose: everyday timekeeping, a particular look, activity tracking, or another clearly defined need.
- Choose the category that serves that purpose: traditional watch, smartwatch, or a combination.
- If choosing a traditional watch, compare quartz and mechanical movements, then check the specific model’s care information.
- If choosing a smartwatch, verify phone compatibility and compare usability, battery performance, features, fitness functions, build, and relevant testing.
- Check the case and strap fit, then read the exact maker instructions for water resistance and care.
- Compare current prices and availability for the models you are considering, and verify any certification or standards claim against model-specific evidence.
