Short answer: MB&F’s official model pages do not identify a watch called the “Legacy Machine 1 EVO” or “LM1 EVO.” They document the original Legacy Machine No.1, plus EVO versions of other Legacy Machine models. That means there is no verified LM1-versus-LM1-EVO specification sheet to compare. The useful comparison is between the documented LM1 and the durability-focused features MB&F introduced on selected later EVO references.
If a listing, seller or article uses “LM1 EVO,” ask for its exact reference number and an MB&F source. It may be using “EVO” loosely, confusing the watch with the LM Perpetual EVO or LM Split Escapement EVO, or referring to a limited or privately documented piece that the cited public pages do not establish.

Does MB&F make an LM1 EVO?
The official MB&F pages reviewed name Legacy Machine No.1 and separate EVO models, but they do not name a “Legacy Machine 1 EVO” or “LM1 EVO.” The original LM1 is listed on MB&F’s past-machines page, while the company presents the Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO and Legacy Machine Split Escapement EVO as distinct watches.
That distinction matters because “EVO” is not a universal trim level that can be applied safely to every Legacy Machine. The perpetual-calendar and split-escapement watches have their own movements, cases and complications. Their specifications cannot be transferred to an LM1, and a seller’s use of the name alone is not proof that an LM1 EVO exists.

The public evidence also cannot prove that no discontinued, limited or privately documented reference has ever been called LM1 EVO. It does establish that the official pages cited here do not identify one. A reference number, dated catalogue or direct confirmation from MB&F would be needed to substantiate a separate LM1 EVO claim.
What the original Legacy Machine No.1 actually is
A flying balance as the visual centrepiece
MB&F introduced the Legacy Machine No.1 in 2011 as a tribute to traditional watchmaking. Its most conspicuous element is a 14 mm flying balance wheel suspended above the movement. The wheel is not merely decorative: it is the regulating organ made visually dominant, floating over the bridges and plates rather than being hidden beneath a dial.
The watch has two time displays, one on each side of the upper structure. MB&F says the displays can be set independently from one another and do not have to correspond to fixed time zones. In practical terms, the owner can use them for any two chosen times rather than being limited to a prescribed home-time and local-time pairing.
A vertical power-reserve indicator sits between the displays. It shows the remaining energy from the single mainspring barrel and gives the otherwise open architecture a direct functional readout.
Documented movement and case specifications
MB&F’s official LM1 page lists a 44 × 16 mm case, a manually wound movement, 279 components, 23 jewels and a 45-hour power reserve. Those figures describe the original LM1 page, not an EVO edition.
The movement was developed for MB&F by Jean-François Mojon and Chronode. Kari Voutilainen handled the bridge design and finishing specifications, with MB&F describing the result as 19th-century-style hand finishing. The combination explains why the LM1 reads as both a kinetic sculpture and a conventional mechanical watch: the regulating system is exposed, but the construction and finishing follow classical watchmaking conventions.

Recognition and historical context
According to MB&F, the LM1 received both the Public Prize and the Best Men’s Watch Prize at the 2012 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Those awards belong to the LM1’s documented history; they are not evidence of a later LM1 EVO variant.

On the EVO models for which MB&F provides specifications, the term signals a treatment intended to make a highly sculptural Legacy Machine more suitable for an active lifestyle. The exact implementation varies by model. EVO is therefore best understood as a design and protection direction, not as a promise that every EVO watch shares one movement, size or complication.
Legacy Machine Split Escapement EVO
MB&F describes an EVO case for the Split Escapement with several protection-oriented changes: 80 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, an integrated rubber strap and a bezel-free case design. It also uses the company’s FlexRing shock-absorbing system.
FlexRing is described as an annular dampener positioned between the case and movement. Its purpose is to address shocks along both vertical and lateral axes. This is materially different from the original LM1 information, which lists its dimensions and movement architecture but does not state 80 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, an integrated rubber strap or FlexRing protection.
Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO
The Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO demonstrates that an EVO treatment can accompany an entirely different complication. MB&F identifies it as a perpetual calendar with a mechanical processor. Its listed case measures 44 × 17.15 mm, water resistance is 80 m and the power reserve is 72 hours.

They should not be read as an upgraded LM1 specification: the perpetual calendar is a different movement and a different watch. The larger 17.15 mm thickness and 72-hour reserve illustrate how far an EVO reference can differ from the 44 × 16 mm, 45-hour LM1 baseline.

Original LM1 versus documented EVO examples
The table separates verified LM1 information from features MB&F assigns to other EVO models. “Not stated” means the cited official page does not establish a value for that model.
| Characteristic | Legacy Machine No.1 | LM Split Escapement EVO | LM Perpetual EVO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model status | Original LM1, introduced in 2011 | Separate EVO model | Separate EVO model |
| Primary display or complication | Two independently set time displays; vertical power reserve | Split-escapement architecture; exact figures not stated on the cited summary | Perpetual calendar with mechanical processor |
| Case dimensions | 44 × 16 mm | Not stated | 44 × 17.15 mm |
| Power reserve | 45 hours | Not stated | 72 hours |
| Water resistance | Not stated on the cited LM1 page | 80 m | 80 m |
| Crown and strap features | Not stated as EVO-style features | Screw-down crown and integrated rubber strap | Not stated in the cited summary |
| Shock protection | Not stated | FlexRing annular dampener for vertical and lateral shocks | Not stated in the cited summary |
| Movement description | Manual wind, single mainspring barrel; 279 components; 23 jewels | Different split-escapement movement | Different perpetual-calendar movement |
This comparison answers the apparent “difference” without inventing a nonexistent LM1 EVO sheet: the LM1 is documented as a classical, manually wound dual-time watch, while the cited EVO examples add protective case engineering and, in the perpetual model, a different high-complexity movement.

Daily-wear protection
The EVO features documented for the Split Escapement EVO address practical exposure. A screw-down crown and 80 m water resistance provide a more clearly specified barrier against water than the LM1 page supplies. An integrated rubber strap is likewise a use-oriented choice, and the bezel-free case changes the visual and physical treatment of the watch.

FlexRing adds a stated shock-management strategy between movement and case. That does not make an EVO watch indestructible, nor does it establish a comparable protection rating for the LM1. It does show the design priority MB&F was pursuing on that reference: preserving a complex, suspended movement while making the case better suited to movement and impact.
Mechanical identity
An LM1 owner is buying its 14 mm flying balance, independent dual displays, vertical reserve indicator and manually wound 45-hour calibre. Choosing an EVO model is not simply choosing the same watch in a tougher shell. The LM Perpetual EVO replaces the LM1’s display concept with a perpetual calendar and uses a 72-hour movement; the Split Escapement EVO is also a separate mechanical architecture.
Dimensions and wearing experience
The LM1’s listed 44 × 16 mm case establishes a substantial but specific profile. The LM Perpetual EVO is listed at 44 × 17.15 mm, adding 1.15 mm of stated thickness while changing the complication and reserve. That is a model-to-model difference, not evidence that an LM1 EVO has the same dimensions. No case measurement for the Split Escapement EVO is supplied in the cited material, so a seller should not be allowed to fill that gap with an assumed LM1 size.
How to check a claim that a watch is an “LM1 EVO”
- Request the complete reference number. A family nickname is insufficient. Ask for the number engraved on the case, warranty card or official documentation.
- Match the name to an MB&F model page. The original LM1 page and the two EVO pages linked above identify their models explicitly. A claimed LM1 EVO should have an equally direct source.
- Separate movement claims from case claims. Confirm whether the watch has the LM1’s manual-wind, 279-component, 23-jewel movement or a different complication. Do not accept “EVO” as a substitute for a calibre description.
- Check every protection specification independently. Treat 80 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, an integrated rubber strap and FlexRing as features of the Split Escapement EVO example unless documentation assigns them to the exact watch being offered.
- Ask for provenance when the reference is discontinued or limited. A dated MB&F catalogue, service record or direct manufacturer confirmation can establish a private or short-run designation that the public pages do not show.
Common mistakes in LM1 EVO comparisons
- Calling the LM Perpetual EVO an LM1 update: it is a perpetual-calendar watch with its own movement, 44 × 17.15 mm case and 72-hour reserve.
- Assigning Split Escapement protection to the LM1: the 80 m rating, screw-down crown, rubber strap and FlexRing are documented for that EVO reference, not for the original LM1 page.
- Assuming “EVO” means a fixed specification package: MB&F’s examples show that the treatment can accompany different complications and dimensions.
- Using the award history as evidence of a later model: the 2012 Public Prize and Best Men’s Watch recognition refer to LM1’s documented history.
- Buying on the nickname alone: without a reference number and source, “LM1 EVO” is an unverified label rather than an established model designation.
Bottom line
There is no LM1 EVO identified on the official MB&F pages used for this comparison. The original Legacy Machine No.1 is the 2011, manually wound 44 × 16 mm watch with a 14 mm flying balance, independently set dual time displays, vertical power reserve, 279 components, 23 jewels and 45 hours of reserve. EVO, in the documented Split Escapement and Perpetual examples, is a later treatment that can add protection-focused case engineering or accompany a completely different complication. Verify the exact reference before treating any “LM1 EVO” listing as an authentic MB&F model.
