Direct sale to a dealer
A dealer may give a preliminary quote from the information you submit, then ask you to ship or bring in the watch for inspection. The physical review may affect the offer. Ask for the inspection findings in writing and make sure you know whether you can decline a revised offer, and who pays to return the watch with insurance. Do not ship until the dealer has explained the process and the coverage that applies while the watch is in transit and in its possession.
Auction consignment
Consignment is not an immediate sale to the auction house. You authorize it to offer the watch for sale, and your proceeds depend on whether it sells and on the contract’s costs and terms. Direct sale or auction: what should you compare?
Compare the likely net proceeds and practical terms, not just the largest headline estimate. A dealer may provide a more defined offer-and-payment path, subject to inspection; consignment may take longer because payment follows a sale and is governed by the auction agreement. What does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned mean for a seller?
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (RCPO) is principally a resale channel for buyers, not a promise that every Official Rolex Retailer will purchase a watch from an individual owner. Rolex says qualifying watches must be at least two years old, are authenticated through Rolex and fully serviced, and are offered by participating Official Rolex Retailers with a two-year international guarantee. Those program terms describe watches sold through RCPO; they do not establish that a particular retailer buys watches from consumers.
Rolex’s certification-process page says, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” This is Rolex’s statement about its own authentication claim; it should not be taken to mean that independent watch professionals cannot assess a watch.

Get the answers in the written agreement that applies to your location; provider terms can change. Keep a copy of the agreement and shipment records.

There is no universal timeline in the available provider terms. In a direct sale, ask when payment follows acceptance of the final offer. In consignment, payment depends on the auction and its contract; Aubreys states that it pays by bank transfer two weeks after auction, which should not be generalized to other auction houses.
Use a documented transaction process and independently verify that funds have settled before releasing or transferring the watch.
