Why a Mechanical Watch Is Losing Time—and How to Troubleshoot It

A mechanical watch may lose time because of winding, wear, position, temperature, shock, or magnetism. Measure its rate consistently and use the model’s guidance to decide when to seek service.

A mechanical watch can lose time because of its winding state, how it is worn, its position, temperature, a shock, or magnetism. A small, steady drift may be normal for the model; a sudden or pronounced change deserves attention. First measure the watch’s daily rate under consistent conditions, then use the pattern and any recent exposure to decide whether it needs professional service.

Measure the loss before diagnosing it

Set the watch against a reliable time reference, then check it at the same time each day over several days. Record how many seconds it gains or loses per day. Keep the observation period and wearing routine as consistent as possible, including how long it is worn and when it is wound. A single glance cannot establish a daily rate.

Compare the result with the accuracy specification for your exact model. The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives ±5 seconds per day as an example for some highly accurate mechanical watches, not as a general tolerance or a service threshold for all mechanical watches. There is no single daily-loss limit that applies to every model.

Check winding and wearing habits

The mainspring powers a mechanical watch, and its winding state can affect the rate. Seiko also identifies regular usage time and arm movement as factors that may influence gain or loss. For an automatic watch, note how long it is worn and whether the manufacturer’s instructions recommend manual winding. Follow the model’s manual rather than assuming every automatic watch should be wound the same way.

If the manual calls for winding, use its procedure and stop when you feel resistance. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns that winding beyond resistance can damage the mainspring. Seiko’s Canada guidance recommends winding daily at a fixed time, including for self-winding watches, but this is brand guidance—not a universal rule for every watch.

Consider position, temperature, and shock

Gravity, temperature, and shock can affect the delicate parts of a mechanical movement. If the rate changes with how the watch is stored or worn, position may be a factor; compare only under a consistent routine before drawing conclusions. Seiko’s UK guidance advises avoiding temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C and says watches tend to lose time at high temperatures and gain at low temperatures. These are Seiko’s recommendations, not universal operating limits. Check the instructions for your own model.

  • [Mechanical Movement] This watch has manual self-winding. Please consider that mechanical watches that require manual winding can only keep time for a short time after winding. To prevent running or inaccurate time, it is advised that you verify the time periodically and wind up the chain 15–20 times.

A drop or strong impact can alter accuracy. If the watch began losing time after a shock, or its rate changed suddenly, arrange an assessment rather than trying to correct the movement yourself.

Look for possible magnetic exposure

Magnetism can make a mechanical watch gain or lose time. Seiko lists nearby phones, speakers, magnetic jewelry or clasps, hair dryers, electric razors, and refrigerator magnets as possible sources. Jaeger-LeCoultre explains that a strong magnetic field can affect the normal function of a mechanical watch’s balance spring.

Moving the watch away from the source does not necessarily undo the effect: Seiko says a mechanical watch can remain magnetized after it is removed from the magnetic source. Its guidance recommends demagnetization by an authorized Seiko service center. If magnetism is plausible, keep the watch away from the suspected source and ask an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker to assess it. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide a consumer demagnetization procedure.

Choose the next step based on the symptoms

What you observe What to do
Small, steady daily drift, with no recent shock or suspected magnetic exposure Compare the measured rate with the specification in the watch’s manual. Continue consistent observation if it is within that model’s stated accuracy.
Rate changes alongside inconsistent wear or winding Follow the model’s winding instructions and repeat the observation with a consistent routine.
Sudden or pronounced gain or loss, persistent inaccuracy, or unexpected stopping Contact the manufacturer’s authorized service center or a qualified watchmaker for assessment.
Strong magnetic exposure is suspected, or the watch was dropped or struck Seek professional assessment; Seiko recommends authorized service for demagnetization.

Service schedules are brand-specific, not universal. Seiko’s Canada FAQ recommends a service-center examination every three years, with cleaning and oiling where needed; Patek Philippe recommends official service every eight to ten years. Use your own manufacturer’s current guidance and the watch’s condition to determine timing.

What not to do

  • Do not open the case or move the regulator to correct the rate. The guidance cited here does not support consumer adjustments.
  • Do not assume magnetism is the cause simply because the watch is losing time; mechanical watches can lose time for several reasons, and no prevalence figure establishes magnetism as the most likely cause.
  • Do not apply a timing tolerance or temperature limit from another brand to your watch. Use the specification and care instructions for its exact model.
