Quartz watches generally keep time more accurately and need less routine attention than conventional mechanical watches. Mechanical watches run on a wound mainspring and may need professional movement service; quartz watches rely on a battery and electronic circuit. But specifications, care schedules, and service prices vary by model and maker, so compare the actual watches rather than treating category averages as guarantees.
How the movements work
Quartz
A battery powers an electronic circuit and a quartz crystal oscillator. The oscillator regulates timekeeping, while the battery eventually needs replacement. Some manufacturers recommend having an authorized service point replace it, particularly when the watch is water-resistant.

Mechanical
A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring. A manual model needs to be wound by hand; an automatic model uses the wearer’s movement to wind the spring. The watch runs only while it has stored power. Patek Philippe says its self-winding watches generally have a 38–48-hour power reserve, with exceptions for specific models; that is Patek Philippe guidance, not a figure for all automatic watches. See Patek Philippe’s watch-care guidance.

Quartz is typically more accurate. The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives a general benchmark of ±20 seconds per month for quartz watches, compared with “±several seconds/day” as the minimum accuracy stated for mechanical watches. These are broad category descriptions, not guaranteed limits for every model. The association notes that mechanical accuracy depends on winding state, position, and temperature, and that performance on the wrist may differ from catalog conditions. See the Japan Clock & Watch Association’s explanation of watch accuracy.

Keep the measurement periods in view: quartz accuracy is often expressed per month or year, while mechanical accuracy is commonly expressed per day. When comparing two specific watches, check the manufacturer’s stated tolerance, time period, and testing conditions. Manufacturer claims for particular chronometer-certified mechanical or thermocompensated quartz models apply to those products; they do not establish a universal category guarantee. Breitling explains the movement distinction and makes brand-specific claims in its FAQ.
What upkeep does each type need?
Quartz: battery and case checks
Quartz watches need battery replacement, but the battery interval is model-specific; the sources here do not establish a typical lifespan. Replacing a battery can involve opening the case. On a water-resistant watch, that work may affect seals and water resistance, so follow the maker’s instructions and use an appropriately equipped service provider.

Mechanical: winding and movement care
Manual watches need regular winding, while automatic watches need enough wrist movement or winding to maintain their power reserve. Both types can require professional attention. It is not accurate to assume that every mechanical watch must be serviced on one fixed schedule, or that quartz watches never need service.
Follow the maker’s schedule
Maintenance guidance is not uniform. Patek Philippe recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an official service center or authorized retailer. Victorinox recommends a water-resistance test every 18 months at an authorized service center, or at least whenever the case is opened. Those are separate brand policies, not general schedules for all watches. Consult the manual and service guidance for the exact model.

How do service costs compare?
Patek Philippe publishes maximum public service prices in Swiss francs, excluding tax. The figures below are a brand-specific example, not a market average, and the service work is not equivalent to a battery change.
| Service listed by Patek Philippe | Published price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz service | CHF 600 | Maximum public price, excluding tax; year not stated by the source. |
| Mechanical service, manually wound | CHF 900 | Maximum public price, excluding tax; year not stated by the source. |
| Mechanical service, self-winding | CHF 1,000 | Maximum public price, excluding tax; year not stated by the source. |
| Battery change at an authorized point of sale | Free of charge | Patek Philippe’s published policy; it is not the same work as a full service. |
Patek Philippe describes full maintenance as disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn parts, cleaning, reassembly, lubrication, adjustment, and testing. Case and bracelet refreshing is priced separately, and additional parts can add cost. Check Patek Philippe’s service-cost page for current prices and terms. These figures cannot establish a typical price for other brands, countries, or price levels, and they do not support a market-wide lifetime-cost calculation.

How to choose between quartz and mechanical
Start with how you want to use the watch, then compare the exact model’s documentation across these points:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Accuracy: Find the stated tolerance, measurement period, and conditions; do not substitute a category benchmark for a model specification.
- Power: Account for battery replacement on quartz, or winding and power reserve on mechanical watches.
- Routine care: Check the maker’s instructions for battery work, movement service, seals, and water-resistance testing.
- Service cost: Compare published prices in the same currency and note tax treatment, included work, and possible charges for parts, case, or bracelet.
- Preference: Choose quartz if set-and-forget timekeeping and less routine attention matter most; choose mechanical if you value the experience and mechanics of a spring-driven movement enough to accept winding and service needs.
Before buying, confirm service terms for the specific model with its manufacturer or an authorized service point. Service recommendations, prices, and specifications can change.
