These Navitimers share the slide-rule-bezel design, but they serve different purposes: the hand-wound Cosmonaute pairs a 24-hour dial with a chronograph, the Automatic GMT 41 adds a second-time-zone display without a chronograph, and the Automatic 41 is the simpler time-only option. On Breitling’s cited US listings, the Cosmonaute is $12,650 and the GMT 41 is $6,450, both before sales tax.
What separates the Cosmonaute, GMT 41 and Automatic 41?
The key distinction is what each watch is built to display. The Cosmonaute is a chronograph with a 24-hour dial. The Automatic GMT 41 shows a second time zone on a central 24-hour scale but has no chronograph. The Automatic 41 removes both the chronograph and GMT scale for a cleaner dial.

Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute: a 24-hour chronograph
The Cosmonaute’s defining feature is its 24-hour dial: its hands complete one rotation every 24 hours rather than every 12. Breitling says astronaut Scott Carpenter requested a Navitimer variation with this display so he could distinguish day from night in space. The watch also retains chronograph timing, with registers for 1/4 second, 30 minutes and 12 hours.

Breitling’s account of its spaceflight history
Breitling says Carpenter wore a Cosmonaute on Mercury-Atlas 7 on May 24, 1962, a mission that completed three orbits before splashdown. The brand presents it as the first Swiss wristwatch in space; that historical framing and mission account are Breitling’s, rather than an independently verified finding here. The cited modern anniversary reissue is limited to 362 pieces and adds a platinum bezel, sapphire display caseback and mission-related engravings. The limit applies to that reissue, not every Cosmonaute.

Navitimer Automatic GMT 41: a second time zone, without a chronograph
The GMT 41 is for a wearer who wants a second time-zone indication rather than stopwatch timing. Breitling places the 24-hour scale centrally, and the Automatic GMT 41 omits the chronograph. Its automatic caliber Breitling 32 has an approximately 42-hour power reserve in the cited configuration.

Navitimer Automatic 41: the cleaner dial
Breitling describes the Automatic 41 as a streamlined Navitimer interpretation that keeps the design language while dropping both chronograph timing and the GMT’s central 24-hour scale. It is the most straightforward choice of the three if a second time zone and stopwatch function are not wanted. The cited collection description does not provide a specific Automatic 41 reference’s price or technical specifications, so those depend on the exact variant.
Which Navitimer fits which use?
- Choose the Cosmonaute if a 24-hour dial and chronograph are the priority, and the manually wound movement and cited limited-edition details suit your interest.
- Choose the GMT 41 if a second time zone matters more than chronograph timing. The cited version is thinner than the cited Cosmonaute, but configuration details vary across the collection.
- Consider the Automatic 41 if you want the Navitimer look without either elapsed-time chronograph registers or a GMT scale. Check the exact reference for its movement, dimensions and price.
For the two cited US listings, the Cosmonaute is 1.35 mm thicker than the GMT and costs USD 6,200 more before sales tax. These comparisons apply only to references PB02301A1B1A1 and A32310211G1P1 as listed by Breitling; they are not market-wide price comparisons.
