What makes the green urushi dial distinctive?
Seiko says lacquer artist Isshu Tamura made the dial in his Kanazawa studio, applying and polishing urushi by hand several times. The brand describes the green as a reference to Kanazawa’s summer landscape, with gold accents intended to evoke sunlight passing through moss-covered forests. Those are Seiko’s stated design inspirations.
Handwork also means the dial is not expected to be perfectly uniform. Seiko notes that slight color differences and minute distortions may occur, and describes each dial as unique. How does the double-retrograde display work?
The watch combines central hour, minute and seconds hands with a power-reserve indicator and two calendar scales. Monochrome’s 2022 launch description places the retrograde day display at about 2:30, the power-reserve indicator around 9:30 and the retrograde date at 6 o’clock. Seiko confirms the functions; those approximate positions come from the launch coverage. Monochrome’s description shows how the elements are arranged on the dial.
A retrograde indicator travels along an arc and, at the end of its scale, returns to the beginning rather than making a full rotation. Here, the day and date indications give the dial more visual activity than conventional calendar windows. The trade-off is that the information occupies more dial space, so buyers who prefer a very spare layout may favor a simpler display.

How large is the SPB295J1, and what do the dimensions tell you?
The 40.5 mm diameter is only one part of fit. At 47.8 mm lug-to-lug and 12.8 mm thick, the watch’s footprint and height are also worth comparing with a watch you already wear. Seiko lists its weight as 93 g. These measurements provide a useful basis for comparison, but cannot establish how the watch will sit on an individual wrist.

The dual-curved sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface. The leather strap fastens with a push-button three-fold clasp, and the 20 mm lug spacing is the relevant measurement when checking a replacement strap. Confirm compatibility with the strap maker or retailer rather than assuming a generic 20 mm strap will fit this particular clasp and case as desired.
What movement is inside, and what does it offer?
Seiko specifies its 6R24 automatic caliber, which can also be wound by hand. The brand lists 31 jewels, an approximately 45-hour power reserve and accuracy of +25 to -15 seconds per day. It also includes a stop-seconds function, which halts the seconds hand while setting the time. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not describe the timing performance of a particular watch after purchase.
